Gilchrist, Dr. William Lancely,
Peacefully passed away on Wednesday, November 20, 2024 at his home, at the age of 93.
Beloved husband of Gillian for 66 wonderful years. Loving father of Mark (Dianne), Timothy (the late Lisa), Anne, and Christopher. Adoring grandfather of Ian (Selen), Cameron, Robert, Catherine, and Alexander. Predeceased by his brother Robert and his twin sister, Eileen.
Bill had an adventurous spirit throughout his life, moving away from England with his beloved wife to begin practice in Canada. He was a highly respected Pediatrician who served Oshawa and the surrounding community for almost 40 years. He pioneered the use of lifesaving RH exchange transfusions in Durham Region in the 1960’s.
Bill was a dedicated parishioner of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church and as a young lad he attended Ampleforth College where he boxed and played rugby which gave him his unique nose. In his spare time, he was an avid golfer and even in later life he’d love to sit and watch his grandchildren hitting balls at the driving range. He was a keen and dauntless skier, on one occasion continued skiing in the Rockies after breaking his shoulder. Gardening was another passion of his, and he delighted in cultivating beautiful flower beds that brought joy to those who visited
The family wish to acknowledge and thank all the people (friends, personal care workers, nurses and doctors) and a special thanks to Doctor Caroline McAllister whose care made his final stages both gentle and peaceful.
As per his wishes, cremation has taken place and a Funeral Mass will be held at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church, Oshawa on Monday, November 25, 2024 at 10:00am. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
