It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Thomas Alexander
McLean, lovingly known as Tom, on Sunday, November 17th at Lakeridge
Health Oshawa Hospital.
Born on May 31st, 1938 in Quebec, Tom lived a full life of family, friends and
sports. He was married to his loving wife Kathleen “Kathy”(nee Munro) for 61
years, had 5 children, 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was a
loving brother, husband, uncle, devoted father and cherished papa and great
grandpa, and a dear friend to many.
Tom joined the Navy when he was 18. He spent 5 years stationed in Halifax on
HMCS Athabaskan. When he finished his service, he worked in the printing
industry and continued his career in this field. He had the gift of striking up
conversation with anyone which made him an excellent conversationist
especially when it came to the subject of hockey.
As an avid sports enthusiast, Tom found great joy in both watching and
participating in sports. In his youth, he played football and was invited to the
Montreal Alouettes training camp. Unfortunately, a knee injury prevented him
from playing. His passion for sports continued as he dedicated many years to
coaching hockey. He was proud to say that 2 of the players he coached made it
to the NHL. Whether he was watching his grandchildren play hockey or
coaching, Tom was well known in many hockey arenas. You couldn’t walk into
an arena with him without someone recognizing him and wanting to chat. He
also loved the game of golf and enjoyed marshalling at a local golf course.
Tom will be missed dearly by his wife Kathy, his sister Sandra Taylor (nee
McLean), brother-in-law Bill Taylor, and his 5 children; Dale (Rob), Barb, Joanne,
Karen (Brian) and Kevin. His grandchildren and great grandchildren will also feel
a deep loss. He will also be dearly missed by all family members and friends.
In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be greatly
appreciated by the family.
A Celebration of Life for Tom will take place on December 13, 2024 from
2:00-7:00 p.m. at the Oshawa Naval Veteran’s Club (320 Viola Avenue,
Oshawa). Family and friends are invited to gather and share memories in his
honour.
