Obituary
Dennis Thacker , F.C.A
April 28, 1932 – October 16, 2024.
Our family would like to announce that Dennis passed away peacefully
at Sunrise of Oakville residence on October 16, 2024. He was the much loved husband of Shirley Thacker for over 70 years. He was also the proud father of Debbie (David), Kenneth (Nancy), Greg (Catherine), and Russell (Leanne). Ten beautiful grandchildren knew him as Grandad including Matt (Erin), Chris (Melissa), Justine (Adam), Tim (Meghan), Mallory, Preston, Amanda, Mackenzie, Evan, and Elizabeth. He was also Great Grandad to Ayla, Kai, Freddie, Lettie, and Nolan.
Born in Letchworth Garden City, England, Dennis and his new bride Shirley emigrated to Canada in 1957 and settled in Montreal, QC before moving off the island to Candiac to raise their family, and helping to build an English protestant elementary school and the Candiac United Church. After initially working for Price Waterhouse, Dennis soon started his own Chartered Accountant business with an office on Sherbrooke Street, where he successfully helped many individuals and small family businesses thrive through his passion for prudent fiscal management. After moving the family to Montreal West in 1972, he continued his strong church involvement at Montreal West United Church. Political and economic uncertainty in Quebec led him to join a small accountancy firm and relocate again in 1979 to Oakville, ON where he and Shirley joined St. John’s United Church. He continued his strong community volunteerism by serving as treasurer to several non-profit organizations. As well, Dennis followed in his father’s footsteps and belonged to the Masonic Temple for over 50 years.
Over his lifetime, Dennis was known as a great orator, and instilled in his children the importance of speaking with clarity and purpose, while also providing a shining example of quietly helping others in need without expecting recognition. After retirement, Dennis maintained his work ethic for many years as a tax preparer for numerous family, friends, and colleagues as he retreated to his office bunker in the basement. When he did emerge, it was often to enjoy a tee time at the Oakville Golf Club, where he was a member and helped organize the annual Tin Hat Tournament for many years, or to watch his favourite soccer team play, the Arsenal Football Club.
Although he struggled with dementia over the last few years, Dennis maintained a twinkle in his eye and never lost his sense of humour. Our family would like to acknowledge the care and support staff at Sunrise of Oakville for their compassion and service during the last period of his life. A memorial service is to be planned in the coming weeks. Updates to follow.
In lieu of flowers, a donation made in honour of Dennis to St. John’s United Church in Oakville would be much app
