Kurnitzki-West, Vera
Vera left us peacefully after an unexpected month-long stay at Toronto Western Hospital at 10:24 AM on Thursday October 24, 2024, surrounded by family at the age of 63 – just two months shy of her 64th birthday. Her loss will be mourned by her only daughter Hanna Kurnitzki-West (Adam), her dear sister Claudia Hammerberg (Ole), her two nieces Heidi (Tony 1) and Kirstin (Tony 2) Hammerberg, and her countless friends. She was predeceased by her husband and partner of 35 years, Robert Malcolm West.
She was a gifted communicator, being fluent in German, English and French. She prided herself on being a doting mother and working professional the majority of her life, making friends wherever she went. Notably, she was instrumental in putting the City of Toronto and the GTA on the world map during her tenure at Tourism Toronto, where she spoke the city’s praises in articles she published in the Toronto Visitor Guide and Chinese Vogue. She also inspired the development of the Luminato Arts Festival and wrote the winning bid for the Toronto Pan-Am Games in 2015.
Arrangements have been entrusted to MORGAN FUNERAL HOME (415 Regent St., Niagara-on-the-Lake). In keeping with Vera’s wishes, a private family burial took place on Saturday, November 2, 2024.
Those who wish to make a donation in Vera’s memory can support secondary dystonia research with the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation at dystoniacanada.org/donateonline.
