Ralph William Varney
May 1, 1933 – January 3, 2024
Peacefully in his 90th year at Upper Canada Lodge in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Devoted husband to Dawn (predeceased) with whom he spent 50 years of joy. Father to Stephen (predeceased), David and Grant Varney. Heroic stepfather to John and Alan Bickerton (predeceased), and Deborah Nikifortchuk. His loss is also grieved by Donna and Harmony Bickerton, Alex Nikifortchuk and Linda Steele.
Ralph began his career at the Toronto Stock Exchange when he was just 14 years old, and he remained there until his retirement from Leede Jones Gable at the age of 75. Ralph was the first person ever to trade stocks by computer, serving on the CATS development team, and testing the system for two years prior to its implementation. He did not realize that he was changing the way the world conducts business.
Ralph was loved for his wonderful sense of humour, his passion for singing, and his great affection for cats. He was a good man, admired for his honesty and sense of justice.
Many thanks to the people of Chartwell Orchards and Upper Canada Lodge whose care and compassion made Ralph’s last years happy and comfortable.
In keeping with Ralphs wishes, cremation has taken place. As an expression of sympathy, those who wish may make a memorial donation to the Niagara Falls SPCA and Humane Society. Memories, photos and condolences may be shared at www.morseandson.com.
