MARUCA, Luigino ‘Lui’ -It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband and father, Luigino Maruca, on Friday, March 15, 2024, at the age of seventy-one. Cherished husband of 52 years to Rose (nee Stranges) and beloved father to Florence and Nicolino. Dear brother of Paolino (Giovanna Floro) Maruca and Olivia Maruca (Portogallo), and brother-in-law of Luigina Stranges (Andrea). He will be sadly missed by his nephews, nieces and many friends and cousins. Luigino was predeceased by his parents, Nicolino Maruca and Fiorina Rocca; his brother Andrea Maruca (Luigina and sister Maria Maruca (Fransceso Stranges); his in-laws, Filippo and Fiorentina Stranges; and his brothers-in-law, Fransceso Stranges, Fransceso Portogallo, and Thomas Stranges Lui, as he was affectionally know as to those close to him, was born in Conflenti, Italy and immigrated to Canada in 1971. During his citizenship interview, the agent asked him, “Mr. Maruca, do you swear to defend Canada, including taking up arms?”. Lui replied, “I do, except against Italy I will not go to war against my family, so if that disqualifies me from citizenship, you can keep it.” The officer told Lui she had been a citizenship official for over thirty years and had never heard a more honest response. “Congratulations, Mr. Maruca, your citizenship is granted.” He was proud to be from Calabria but made a life in Canada and embraced this country for all its opportunities. Having come to Canada by himself as a teenager, A truer gentleman conceivably never graced the City of Niagara Falls, where he was from. He built a reputation as a man of great honour and integrity and was respected by many. A renaissance man in every sense of the word, he was a maestro in many, many ways, especially in botany, charcuterie, enology, and mathematics. As a fervent outdoorsman, Lui was most content in the bush, especially moose hunting, due to the camaraderie with his hunting mates and the sheer joy and beauty of the open wilderness. His motto was, “I live to hunt, not hunt to live.” A day would not go by for family or friends to visit Lui and his loving wife Rose’s home, as they always made everyone feel welcome. They were together such gracious hosts, always sharing the harvest from their garden or giving salami or a bottle of wine to take back to their home so they could enjoy it with their loved ones. The most important thing in Luigino’s life was his children, Florence and Nicolino, whom he adored and loved very much. He ingrained in them the value of obtaining a postsecondary education and to try their best to contribute to society in a meaningful and honourable way. He taught his children that trying to help people and having compassion for others is a quality they should always aim to have. Most importantly, Luigino taught Florence and Nicolino that the love of family is the only thing that matters in this world, that they always need to stick together, and that they should never let anything get in the way of that.
