Lois Wilma Atkinson (nee Beattie) of Niagara Falls, Ont, passed away on May 25,2024 at the Niagara General Hospital in her 91st year. She was the wife of the late Charles (Charlie) H. Atkinson who had immigrated to Canada from Newcastle Upon Tyne, England in the early 50’s. Wilma was born and raised in the Eastern Townships of Quebec and attended McGill to achieve a teacher’s certificate. Her first teaching job was at the air force base in St Hubert, PQ. She was a devoted mother of 5 children – Barry, Charles, Carolyn, Andrew, and Eric – and the proud grandmother of 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Wilma and Charlie met in the Saguenay region of Quebec where Wilma was on a teaching assignment at the local school and Charlie was working at Alcan. They moved to Niagara Falls, Ontario in 1965 where they raised their five children. They enjoyed Scottish country dancing and were members of the St. Catherines Royal Scottish Country Dance Club for many years and attended the seasonal dance parties in Hamilton, ON and Buffalo, NY. They enjoyed boating and water skiing on the Niagara River and travel to many countries throughout the world.
Wilma loved her piano and taught piano lessons well into her 80’s. She was a long-time member of Stamford United Church, enjoyed the Red Hat society, and member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority in Niagara Falls. She will be missed by all her children, their spouses, and grandchildren. Special thanks to the Niagara General Hospital, Walker Family Cancer Centre, and Queenston Place Retirement Residence for the excellence in care provided to our mother. Final arrangements are being handled by Morse and Son Funeral Home of Niagara Falls. Cremation has taken place. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Walker Family Cancer Centre or Stamford Lane United Church are appreciated.
