HABERMEHL, Fred passed away peacefully on Thursday November 14th, 2024 in London, Ontario. He has gone to his heavenly home in his 98th year. Fred was the husband of Alice for 70 years, until her passing in 2020. Fred was the devoted father of Margaret, Debbie (Ralph), Cathy and Jennifer, and loving Grandfather to 8 grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren.
Fred led a thoughtful and humble life, embracing the opportunities for growth and change that life presented him. He was born and raised in Hespeler, ON, leaving home at age 18 to move to the big city of Toronto to attend the Central Baptist Seminary, where he met Alice. He graduated with a Licentiate of Theology Degree in 1950, marrying Alice shortly after. He took up the pastorship in La Bonne Nouvelle, NB, then on to Drumbo (ON) Baptist Church in 1953. He went on to earn a BA from McMaster University and an MA from the University of Toronto, all whilst working full time and having 3 young children. The family moved to Bolivia in 1958 and together, Fred and Alice took up international mission work. They returned to Canada in 1963 and in 1964 moved to Niagara Falls where Fred taught English at NFCVI. In 1968 he began his career at Niagara College, where he became the Dean of Health Sciences and Applied Arts, retiring in 1990. During his life he was a minister, missionary, educator, administrator, mentor, leader, author (of 17 books), historian, archivist, museum supporter and explorer, traveller, gardener, pianist, choir conductor, singer, as well as person dedicated to his wife, family and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held for both Fred and Alice, on Saturday November 30th at Morse and Son Funeral Home, 5917 Main Street, Niagara Falls ON, with a service at 1pm followed by a reception. For those unable to attend the service, it will be live-streamed on Morse & Son’s Facebook page www.facebook.com/morseandson
In lieu of flowers, and as an expression of sympathy, memorial donations can be made to Project Share, Niagara Falls, a not for profit charity providing food security, homelessness prevention and essential supports to individuals and families, or to a local food bank of your choice.
