Gerrard (Gerry) Michaud
May 6, 1937 – November 25, 2023
Gerry Michaud, much loved husband of Sharon Michaud for 32 years, passed away peacefully on November 25, 2023.
Gerry is predeceased by his first wife, Marlene, parents Avila and Louise Michaud, and his brother, Lloyd. In addition to Sharon, he is survived by his brother, Mark (Will), his children Loretta Michaud, Michael (Kim) Michaud, Karl (Helen) Michaud, Kathleen (Leo) Rubino, his stepdaughter, Priscilla McKenzie (Len) and stepson, Brian McIntyre. Gerry is also survived by his 15 grandchildren/step-grandchildren, 5 nephews and 1 niece.
Gerry led an active, full life. As a young man of 16, he was one of only 32 Queen Scouts chosen to represent Canada at the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II. He served his community of Thorold, Ontario as Assistant Scoutmaster and then Scoutmaster for the 1st Thorold troop. Gerry was also Secretary to the St. Catharines & District Boy Scouts Association.
Gerry worked at the Interlake Tissue Mills, the Ontario Paper Company, Monarch Life and then General Motors where he became involved with the United Auto Workers (UAW). Gerry served in many roles in the local union, culminating in the office of President, a position he served in from 1979 to 1987. During that period, he was active in the union’s separation from the UAW, and he was a member of the first National Executive Board of the newly formed Canadian Auto Workers (CAW) union.
Gerry served his community in many ways. He was active with the St. Catharines United Way in many capacities including President – the first Labour leader to do so. He helped establish the St. Catharines and District Unemployed Help Centre and Gerry was its first President. He also served on the Board of Directors for Brock University and was a founding member and Vice-President of the St. Catharines Community Legal Clinic.
In 1984, Gerry was the NDP candidate for Member of Parliament in the St. Catharines riding.
Following heart surgery and 1987 negotiations with General Motors, Gerry was appointed by the CAW President, as the first Director of the CAW Family Education Centre in Port Elgin, Ontario. He held that position until January 1990 when at his own request Gerry was made head of the CAW Strike Department where he assumed other duties including local union finances and by-law reviews.
Gerry retired early, at 56 years old, to Hungerford Township where he and Sharon were their own contractors in building their home on the edge of their forested land. This was a new phase of life, volunteering for local charities and woodworking. Gerry was active with the Quinte chapter of the Ontario Woodlot Association as Secretary/Treasurer and loved walking in the woods.
At his request, Gerry has been aquamated. Again, at his instruction, a celebration of life will be held at a later date which is to be determined. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Tweed Food Bank.
Online condolences and donations to the Tweed Food Bank (Salvation Army, Tweed), Morningstar Mission, Napanee or the Gleaners Food Bank, Belleville can be forwarded through www.wartmanfuneralhomes.com. Funeral arrangements entrusted with Wartman Funeral Home, Napanee Chapel.
