Obituary
It is with deeply saddened hearts that we share the news that our beloved husband/daddy/papa Simon D’Cruz passed peacefully on October 18, 2024.
Simon was born in Goa, India to his parents Anthony and Maryann D’Cruz. He was the eldest of his siblings; Monica, Louis, Vincent (deceased) and Francis (deceased). He spent his early years in Siolim, Goa and was primarily raised by his beloved grandmother, Maria Caitana D’Souza. Simon reminisced fond memories of her and even named his first-born daughter in remembrance of his Nana. Simon frequently reflected about his childhood, sharing stories of playing soccer, climbing trees to enjoy fresh fruit, and racing to watch the ships arrive at the port.
Despite his humble beginnings and a life marked by challenges, Simon possessed a heart of gold until the very end. Simon was a figure of respect, admiration, and love to everyone who crossed his path. His humility set him apart; he never sought the spotlight or accolades, yet his actions spoke volumes about his character.
Simon and Anna married in Karachi on January 29, 1972, at St Patrick’s Cathedral. Their union was blessed with four children, and later five grandchildren:
Maria (Bertram)
Malcolm (Sabika) – Zeraili, Zatasha, Dexter
Melanie (Justin) – Jaxon, Emily
Michelle (Jarrod)
Simon enjoyed a lengthy career at Grindlays Bank, retiring after 38 years of dedicated service. Throughout his time there, he formed several friendships that continue to endure today. He later joined St. Patrick’s Technical School, forming further friendships and continued to work until he immigrated to Canada with his family. At the age of 74, Simon finally retired in Canada, marking the beginning of a new and fulfilling chapter in his life. He dedicated this time to cherishing moments with his grandchildren and showering them with unwavering love and affection. Simon found immense joy in being an active part of their lives, whether it was through storytelling, playing games, watching movies or going on walks and taking them to the parks.
Known affectionately as “Uncle Simon” to many, he was a beloved figure in his community of family and friends, exuding kindness and generosity that touched countless lives. His selflessness and compassion were evident in every interaction, leaving a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him. In addition to nurturing these precious relationships, Simon embraced technology by learning to navigate social networks. This newfound skill allowed him to stay connected with family and friends across the globe, bridging distances that might have otherwise separated them. He regularly shared updates, photos, and messages, ensuring that those he cared about felt his presence and love, no matter where they were.
Despite never driving a car or riding a motorcycle, Simon never allowed these limitations to hinder his spirit. He embraced the world around him with determination, walking long distances and utilizing public transportation to reach his destinations. His resilience and resourcefulness were inspiring, demonstrating that one could navigate life’s challenges with grace and tenacity.
His strong faith and devotion were the cornerstones of his existence. Simon lived a life guided by principles of love, kindness, and service, reflecting his deep spiritual beliefs. Over the years, Simon consistently shared his affection and wisdom with his loved ones. He will always hold a special place in the hearts of his family and will be fondly remembered by his extended family, siblings, cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews as well as his many friends in Pakistan, Canada and around the world.
On October 13th, a significant milestone was celebrated as he turned 94. This special occasion was marked by a heartfelt gathering of his immediate family, creating a warm and loving atmosphere. Surrounded by his devoted wife, children, and grandchildren, the celebration was not just a birthday party but a cherished family reunion.
Simon’s life can be described as a vibrant tapestry woven from the threads of family bonds, cherished memories, and enduring connections. Each aspect of his life contributed to a rich narrative that reflects not only the experiences he had but also the relationships he nurtured along the way.
