It is with heavy hearts that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, Sara Maria da Estrela Ferreira de Medeiros on September 11, 2024. She was a devoted wife and mother, a cherished and loving Avó (grandmother) and a loving sister, who impacted the lives of those who knew and loved her.
Born in the village of Livramento on November 26th, 1942, on São Miguel Island in the Açores, she was the second eldest of a large family. Her big heart helped her raise her siblings until she started a family of her own. She was an example of strength, resilience and determination for her children and grandchildren. Her generosity (which was often unknown), and unwavering love, will be remembered by all who had the privilege of having her in their lives.
In addition to being a family matriarch, Sara held talents and a tenacity that deserves recognition and celebrating. She was a humble and quiet artist. As a young woman she enjoyed creating things of beauty like origami birds and paper flowers. This gift for recognizing artistic beauty is alive in her children and grandchildren. Most would also find it surprising that in 1984, she was part of a group of Portuguese immigrant women, working in the city of Toronto’s cleaning industry, who utilized a union to advocate that their employer offer equality and equity in pay. Her work ethic and determination serve as an inspiration.
When Sara became an Avó, her capacity to love and cherish became immeasurable. In her well-earned retirement she enjoyed her plants and her garden, and again returned to her creative side.
Sara leaves behind a legacy of love and courage that will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends. She is profoundly missed by her husband of 56 years Antonio de Medeiros, her three children, John, Victor, and Paula (Ken), and her five beautiful grandchildren, Anthony, Alex, Rachel, Jack and Lily. She leaves behind her siblings, Luis, Margarida, Inocencia, Joao, and Artur. She is reunited in heaven with her sister Maria, her mother Margarida and those she loved who passed before her.
A funeral service to lay to rest and celebrate the admirable life of Sara Maria da Estrela Ferreira de Medeiros will be held at Assumption Funeral Home. Visitation will take place on September 17th, 2024 from 11:00am to 1:00pm, followed by service at 1:00pm, and entombment.
As expressions of sympathy, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation in Sara’s memory.
Rest in eternal peace our querida (dear) Sara. You will not be forgotten; we now have a guardian angel. Until we are together again.
