It is with profound sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of David John Wentzell on Monday, December 23, 2024. Dave left this world surrounded by the love and comfort of his family at home.
Dave was a kind, loving, and joyous man whose warmth and humor touched everyone who knew him. He had a lifelong passion for old cars, baseball, and savoring a good beer, but above all, he cherished his family.
Beloved partner of Jo Ann McKinlay (née Maguire) for 20 wonderful years, Dave was a proud father to his two daughters, Alexis and Spencer (Cameron), and a devoted stepfather to Ashley (Steve) and Kristie (Luke). His role as “Papa” to his five grandchildren—Mason, Hailey, Bodhi, Danika, and Brooklyn—was one of his greatest joys. He will also be deeply missed by his sister Debbie (Gary), brother Doug (Debbie), his nieces, nephews, and many dear friends.
Born and raised in London, Ontario, to Leroy (Leo) and Alma, Dave attended A.B. Lucas Secondary School and H.B Beal Secondary School; and went on to build a remarkable 35+ year career with Canada Post. He loved his work, forming friendships that endured well into his retirement.
Dave’s life was filled with the simple pleasures he held dear: playing baseball, spending time with loved ones, and enjoying classic rock from bands like Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones, The Police, and Rush, often with a strong cup of coffee in hand.
In recent years, Dave faced life with resilience and courage. Through it all, his strength, bravery, and unyielding spirit shone brightly, right up to his final smile.
Dave will be remembered for his infectious laugh, sharp wit, curly hair, and steadfast stubbornness. His humor, love, and unique presence will forever remain in our hearts.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Dave’s medical team at University Hospital for their compassionate care, as well as the Home Palliative Care Team for their exceptional support during Dave’s final days. With special thanks to Janet and Maxine for their kindness and dedication.
In accordance with Dave’s wishes, a cremation has taken place and the family will privately celebrate his life.
As an expression of sympathy, in lieu of flowers donations in memory of Dave may be made to Salthaven Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Centre or animal rescue of your choice.
Dave’s love, laughter, and legacy will live on in all who knew him. He will be deeply missed and never forgotten.
