Robert Frederick McHugh, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday October 15th, 2023 surrounded by family, atthe age of 92, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Known to all as Bob, he was a man who lived his life to the fullest, cherishing every moment and leaving a markon the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him.
Bob was born on April 5th, 1931 in St. Walburg, Saskatchewan. From an early age, he displayed an unwavering devotion to his family, apassion that would remain with him throughout his life. He issurvived by his loving wife, Nettie McHugh, and his two devoteddaughters, Shelly Rae (late Doug) and Karen Trenton (Michael). He was a hero to his three granddaughters, Kaitlyn (Bailey), Jessica(Elliott), and Carly (George), and his great-grandson, Jack. Bob’s facewould light up with joy whenever he was in their company and he treasured every moment spent with them. Their friends were his friends.
In his youth, Bob’s love for hockey was undeniable. He grew up playing junior hockey, developing not only his skills on the ice but also his passion for the sport that he passed on to his daughters and granddaughters, teaching and taking them to skating practice.
He spent several years working on his family’s farm, embracing the joys and challenges of rural life. Later, he embarked on a new path, becoming a chartered accountant, where his dedication and meticulous nature shone brightly in his work.
In 1973, Bob’s journey took a turn when a transfer with Imperial Oil brought the family from Edmonton to Toronto. It marked the beginning of a new chapter in their lives, and Bob’s adaptability and zest for life ensured that they thrived in their new community.
Bob was a man of diverse interests and talents. He was enthusiastic about technology, enjoying the use of his iPad to stay connected with loved ones and stay up to date with the world. He truly cherished sending pictures, jokes and updates in his group chat with his loving brothers Jim and Cliff. He was also close to his brother Bill who predeceased him.
The cottage was another special place in Bob’s heart, where he found solace, relaxation, and created cherished memories with those he loved.
Among his many interests, Bob loved playing pool in the Swan Lakecommunity centre, where his strategic mind and friendly demeanormade him a sought-after opponent and a beloved team member.
Bob was a man of faith and a strong presence in his community atMarkham Baptist Church. His unwavering commitment to his faith,warm smile, fellowship and willingness to help others made him a pillarof strength and an inspiration to all who had the privilege of knowinghim in that setting.
Bob’s life was a beautiful tapestry of love, dedication, and diverseinterests. He touched the hearts of many with his kindness, wisdom,and boundless love for his family, faith, and community.
His legacy will live on in the stories and memories shared by those fortunate enough to have known him, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of calling him a husband, father, grandfather,great-grandfather, family member and friend.
A celebration of Bob’s life will be held on Thursday, November 2nd,2023 from 11:00am to 2:00pm at EventMrkt in Newmarket.
In lieu of flowers, a donation can be made to Evergreen Palliative Care Physicians or Markham Baptist Church. We thank his GP, Dr.Michael Dawson and Dr. Andrew Patterson and his palliative careteam for taking such wonderful care of Bob at the end of his life.
We thank Pastor Craig Rumble and Bob and Nettie’s churchcommunity for their ongoing love, support and prayers.
Rest in peace, Bob, knowing that your love, memories, and faithwill forever be etched in our hearts. You will always be our guidingstar and a cherished presence in our lives.
