It is with great sadness that we announce that Annie (Anne) Soares (Cardozo) of Scarborough, Ontario, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her family on Thursday, December 26th, 2024, at the age of 90.
Anne was born on December 19th 1934 in Kericho, Kenya. She spent her early years in Goa, where she first met Ezequiel in elementary school, before moving back to Kenya. As a student in Nairobi, she excelled in sports, including badminton and field hockey, winning awards along the way. After completing high school, she graduated from university to become the first Goan nurse in that city. She reconnected with Ezequiel and they were married in 1958. Over the next decade, they became parents to four wonderful children and immigrated to Canada in 1975 for greater opportunities.
The family made their home in Scarborough, Ontario. Anne, a certified florist, and Ezequiel, an experienced businessman, established two thriving family businesses where they worked side-by-side. The businesses continued for over 20 years. Anne’s passion for flowers extended to gardening, where she won the province’s prestigious Champion Bicentennial Award along with several Trillium Awards. However, her greatest joy was being a mother and grandmother. Upon retirement, Anne and Ezequiel reconnected with their heritage, travelling frequently to Goa and enjoying social activities, such as card games, within Toronto’s Goan community.
Anne was predeceased by Ezequiel, and is survived by her children Pamela, Audry (John), Frederick (Judith), Marilyn and her grandchildren Natasha, Sean and Sonia.
A private funeral service will be held in her memory. In lieu of cards and flowers, donations may be made to Thorncliffe Park Urban Farmers (thorncliffeparkurbanfarmers.ca/) or Green Thumbs (www.greenthumbsto.org/get-involved) to honour Anne.
