Obituary of Irene Catherine Fitzmaurice
Irene Fitzmaurice
February 17, 1933 – March 15, 2024
Cradled in the arms of her daughter, Irene Catherine Fitzmaurice died on Friday March 15, 2024, at Victoria Hospital after a long brave battle. Mom died knowing that she was loved and is now at peace.
Our Mom was a private and humble woman. Hidden behind her quiet exterior was a woman of great strength, resilience, courage, humour and most importantly, love. She lived life simply. She had a deep sense of pride but didn’t like being the center of attention. To quote Mom, when told she was beautiful said – I’m not beautiful, just ordinary.
Loved and devoted daughter of the late Joseph and Sabina Schavo and beloved sister of the late Helen and Basil Healey.
Loving and supportive wife of her husband, the late Frank Fitzmaurice (1926-2009).
Beloved and Loving Mom of her children – John (Victoria, BC), Peter and Sarah (Moraga, California), Paul and Leslie (London), and Beth – her best friend, advocate, and co-conspirator in many adventures.
Proud Grandma of Noah, Liam, Owen, Aidan, Isla, and Caleigh.
Proud Aunt Irene of loving nieces and nephews in the Healey, Fitzmaurice and Furlonger clans.
We welcome you to join us to share memories of Irene during visitation at John T. Donohue Funeral Home on Thursday April 4 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8. Prayers will be offered at 7:30pm
We invite you to join us in celebrating her life at her Funeral Mass on Friday April 5, 2024, at 10:30am at St. Francis – St. Martin’s Church, 46 Cathcart Street. Private Interment. Reception to follow immediately after the Mass.
Please help us celebrate Mom’s life with simple acts of generosity that will make a difference in someone’s life: A random act of kindness for a stranger; remind someone that you love them; thank someone who’s helped you; make a donation to an organization that makes people’s lives better such as McCormick Dementia Services, the Victorian Order of Nurses, Habitat for Humanity, or your local food bank.
We are grateful to Angel the PSW, the 911 dispatchers, the paramedics and firefighters, the Victoria Hospital Emerg nurses and PSWs in Pod B, the entire care team and support staff in the ACE unit and the Palliative care team at Victoria Hospital that helped Mom and helped us make the most of the past six weeks.Mom wouldn’t want us to forget our gratitude to the X-ray technologists – a profession she was proud to be a part of but often goes unmentioned.
Most importantly we want to thank Mom’s “village of care” over the past five years, including the incredible team at McCormick Dementia Services, the PSWs from VON, Dr. Janet Zhao and all who worked with Mom to fulfill Mom’s wish to remain at home as long as possible.
We L-O-V-E you Mom!
