Don passed away at University Hospital on December 1, 2023. Don was raised in Point Edward Ontario, a small village at the meeting point of the St. Clair River and Lake Huron. Don’s high schooling took place in Sarnia and Chatham. He attended the University of Western Ontario (UWO), where he graduated with a BA Honors in English in 1960. In the last week of his life, Don spoke of the hard times that fell upon his family in his final year of university, of feeling adrift and sad until he began his teaching career in Elmira where he met Anne Barnett, joyful and adventurous Anne, who opened the world as the love of his life for 56 years.
Don taught High School English for seven years, later becoming a Professor in the Faculty of Education at Western University, where he became Professor Emeritus. He is the author of seventy books: poetry, fiction and scholarly works in educational theory and practice. Don, the son of Grace and William Gutteridge, was predeceased by his wife Anne and his grandson Tom Gutteridge. Don will be dearly missed by his son John and daughter-in-law Becky Seagram; daughter Kate Gutteridge and son-in-law Jeff Spence; grandsons Tim, James, and Kevin; and grand daughters Katie and Rebecca.
Don requested that his life be celebrated in a small gathering of immediate family. Don’s family looks forward to reaching out to thank our loving community of friends and relatives and to remember the legacy of Don and Anne. Condolences can be made through www.londoncremation.com

Gutteridge 1937 2023 and hope that their memory may be a source of comfort during this difficult time. Your thoughts and kind words are greatly appreciated.
Don and I corresponded almost daily for the past five years. He sent his most recent poems and I sent him my work produced that day. We collaborated on two books, one being the book By & By: poems by Don Gutteridge and John B. Lee (Hidden Brook Press, 2020); the other being Fathers & Sons: Poems by Richard (Tai) Grove, Don Gutteridge and John B. Lee (Black Moss Press, 2022). I also had the privilege of judging the Don Gutteridge Awards in 2022, when John Tyndall received the Award. I selected one of Don’s books for the John B. Lee Signature Series in its inaugural year. I am very saddened by his passing. I will miss our daily exchanges. My condolences to the family and to all of his many friends. Tai Grove referred to Don as Prince of Poetry. He was my friend, my mentor, and I will miss him dearly.
I had the distinct pleasure, as publisher of Wet Ink Books, of publishing over 40 poetry books of Don’s fine poetry. Over his decades as a writer he wrote over 75 titles including novels, academia and poetry. He made an indelible mark on the CanLit world. His passing has left a hole in my heart that no poem could possibly fill. Richard M. Grove / Tai
