1931-2024
After a brief illness, Mario passed away on March 5, 2024 at Grand River Hospital at the age of 92.
Beloved husband of the late Rosa Lagonia (Nee Levato) for 53 years (2010). Loving father of Carman Lagonia (Moni), Mary Jakiela (George), Michelle Turnbull (Malcolm) and Silvana Murakami (Nelson). Cherished Nonno of Ben (Kerri) and Alyssa, Kevin (Nicole) and Steven (Remington), Nolan and Adam, Tom, Eddie and Matthew and Bis-Nonno to his adorable great-granddaughters Charlotte and Penelope. Dear brother to Victor (Ida), Antonio (Fiorella), Andrea (Maria) and Luigi (Marinella) and brother-in-law to Gina Levato and Roswitha Lagonia, Maria (late Pino) Mastrogiovanni and Ninni (Jeso) Cimino. He will be missed by his many nieces and nephews.
Mario was predeceased by his parents Carmine and Maria Lagonia and his siblings Anna (late Joe) Levato, Ofelia (late Italo) Vinante, Giovanni Lagonia and his father and mother-in-law Tomasino and Michelina Levato, and siblings-in-law Teresa (Nick) Zangari, Tony Levato.
Mario was the proud owner of Mario’s Food Store for many years and was one of the original founders of the Italian Cortina Club. He was a dedicated and loyal Toronto Maple Leafs and Catanzaro fan. For many years, Mario found pleasure in making and gifting his home-made wine.
Mario’s family will receive relatives and friends from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM on Sunday, March 10, 2024 at the Henry Walser Funeral Home, 507 Frederick Street, Kitchener, 519-749-8467. Funeral will be held at Henry Walser Funeral Home at 10:30 AM on Monday, March 11, 2024 with a hot italian meal to follow. Interment at Woodland Cemetery. Mario’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to the staff and his friends at Briarfield Gardens and the doctors and nurses at Grand River Hospital’s 5A and emergency units.
