Bruno Fergin was born January 21, 1932. He was baptized in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pasieka, Poland and confirmed March 21, 1948 in the Lutheran Church in Holzminden, West Germany.
Husband of Jean (née Zimmerman) whom he married on June 11, 1960. He is survived by his sons, Eric and his wife Tatiana Samila, and Kevin and his wife Christine.
He was grandfather (“Papa”) to Rachel, Jordan, Luke, Chantal and Braden Fergin.
He was predeceased by his parents, Edmund and Alwine Fergin; his sister Elonia “Loni” Wendland and brother-in-law Richard and his twin sister Sylvia Schmidt and brother-in-law Ottmar. He was godfather and uncle to their daughter, Monica.
Bruno was an ethnic German born in Wiktorowo, Poland. At 15 years old in 1947 he escaped from behind the iron curtain with his mother and sister Sylvia to join his sister Loni in West Germany. It was in West Germany he learned the construction trade over 3 years, becoming a bricklayer and a plasterer.
In the spring of 1951, at 19 years old, he emigrated to Canada sponsored by Lutheran World Relief. He initially landed in a farm in Winterbourne, Ontario as a one-year contract of sponsorship. In 1952 he came to Kitchener to find work in his trade. This was very difficult at the time because of the lack of construction work. Finally, after three months he was successful. In 1960, along with a partner, he started his own construction company. In 1964, he and Jean branched out into home building with their firm, B. Fergin Construction. By the time he retired in 1998, he and Jean had built over 500 homes in the Kitchener-Waterloo area. After retirement, Bruno devoted most of his time to his family, serving the board of properties of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Kitchener, gardening and investing.
Bruno’s family will receive relatives and friends from 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM on Thursday, April 11th, 2024 at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 322 East Avenue, Kitchener. Visitation will continue from 10:00 AM- 11:00 AM with a Funeral Service to begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday, April 13th at Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Reception to follow in the church hall. Interment at Woodland Cemetery, Kitchener.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to Holy Cross Lutheran Church would be appreciated by the family (cards available at the funeral home).
