Yvonne Boegman Obituary
It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of Yvonne Boegman, 85, of Kingston, Ontario, on October 27, 2024, at KGH.
Yvonne was born in Pretoria, South Africa, to Louise Petronella Kraus and Frederick Hermanus Barnardo on March 4, 1939. She lived in Cape Town and in Pretoria in her youth, matriculating from Pretoria Girls School in 1955. Yvonne went on to earn a degree in occupational therapy at the University of Pretoria where she met the love of her life, Roland Boegman. They were married on January 19, 1962, settling in Pretoria where her daughter Lisl was born in 1964. Emigrating to Canada, two sons were born, Anton in 1966 in Toronto, and after settling in Kingston, Leon in 1973. Yvonne worked as an OT at Beechgrove Regional Children’s Centre, and with South Frontenac Health Services, until retiring in 1998.
She enjoyed many activities throughout her life including knitting, weaving, pottery, and many forms of art. An avid gardener, she won many horticultural society awards for best bloom of different varietals. She had an incredible network of cherished friends and participated in many social groupings, including the Queen’s Faculty Women’s Club, Stitch Club, Book Club, YMCA fitness group, and Hiking Club with friends.
Yvonne loved being “Granny” to her eight grandchildren, ranging in ages from 29 to 9. Summers were spent at the cottage on Eagle Lake, where family gatherings were never without group photos at dinner time. To entertain her grandchildren, she wrote a series of “Cottage Tales” to read to them, featuring Snappy the turtle and his friends having epic adventures.
Yvonne faced her terminal diagnosis with courage and fortitude and did not let it stop her from living. Her life was full and rich, and she was deeply connected to her family and friends. Yvonne will be tremendously missed.
Yvonne is survived by her husband Roland, children Lisl (and Jeff of Sydenham ), Anton (and Susan of Victoria) and Leon (and Genevieve of Ottawa), sister Maureen (and Brian of Tel Aviv), brothers Trevor (Johannesburg) and Gavin (and Laura of Pretoria), grandchildren Miranda (and David of San Francisco), Linnea (and Jesse of Kingston), Sid (and Emily of Victoria), Archie (Sydenham), Alec (Victoria), Nicole (Sydenham), and Theo and Naomi (Ottawa).
She was predeceased by her parents Louise and Frederick, and her brother Eldred.
The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the ALS Society, Kingston Chapter, the medical staff at KGH, and St. Elizabeth’s home care nurses Erbien and Antony for their care and support over the past 2 and a half years.
A closed-casket visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. to 1:50 p.m on Saturday, November 2, 2024 at James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd, Kingston, followed by a funeral service in the chapel at 2:00 p.m. For those unable to attend in person, please CLICK HERE to register to attend via livestream. A private interment at Cataraqui Cemetery, for family and close-friends, will follow. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome memorial donations to the ALS Society.
