Obituary
Shirley Vines – passed away surrounded by her loving family in Kingston (ON), on Monday, October 16, 2023, at the age of 82.
Shirley was born on August 23, 1941, in Saskatoon (SK), to the late Thomas and Gladys Buckley. She was predeceased by her siblings Ellen and Thomas.
Shirley was a “head girl” in her last year of studies at Nutana Collegiate Institute in Saskatoon. In 1959, in recognition of her academic excellence, leadership, and sportsmanship, the school awarded her the Buckworld Trophy.
Shirley graduated with a degree in physiotherapy from the University of Alberta. Her profession took her to Toronto, England, South Africa, Australia, and then Ottawa where she worked at the Perley Hospital.
In Ottawa, she joined the Britannia Yacht Club (BYC) where she learned to sail. She started racing Sharks and then Solings with her future husband, John Vines. She was an integral part of numerous BYC committees, which eventually earned her the honour of being named a life member of the club. The “Shirley Vines tree” continues to welcome sailors coming in and out of the BYC harbour.
John and Shirley married in 1973. Shirley is survived by her two children, Erika (Kevin) and Alison. She enthusiastically embraced her role as grandmother to Anna and Nikola. In 2011, John and Shirley moved to Kingston to be closer to family. Her love of cooking was much anticipated by family and friends with regular Sunday dinners (and weekly treats) chez the Vines at Commodore’s Cove. Shirley very much loved the time spent with family while pursuing her numerous craft adventures, gardening, and baking. She was a competitive scrabble player and enjoyed the challenge of most board games and word searches. She had a great sense of humour and certainly enjoyed her books!
Shirley was also a very talented seamstress. She spent thousands of hours sewing creations for friends, family, and groups such as the St. Martin’s youth group, the Kingston Yacht Club, CORK Regatta, and the St. James’ Craft group in Kingston. You name it, she probably made it; Jackets, flags, hats, bathing suits, dresses, stuffed animals, Halloween and Christmas costumes, cushions and curtains galore. She enjoyed the challenges of making outfits for people, pets, dolls and fixed too many sails and sailboat covers to count!
The family will host a celebration of her life at St. James Anglican Church, 10 Union St., in Kingston on Saturday, November 4th at 11:00am. This will be followed by a reception at the church. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the ALS Society of Canada, St. James Anglican Church, or the KYC Junior Sailing Corinthian Fund would be appreciated.
