Sheila Rose Alarie Obituary
Sheila Alarie (1932 – 2024)
Sheila Rose Alarie (nee Hamilton) of Kingston, died peacefully December 6, 2024, at Kingston General Hospital, in her 93rd year.
May she Rest in Peace.
Born at Elgin, Ontario on April 19, 1932, the youngest and last remaining child of the late John Dunn Hamilton and the late Margaret Anne Scanlan. Predeceased by her beloved husband Bernard Alarie; by her five siblings: Sister Mary Hamilton, CND; Sister Julia Hamilton, SP; Margaret Murray (late Kenney); Terrence Hamilton (late Rita); and Joseph A. (Ex) Hamilton (late Mary and late son Pat). Survived by two nieces: Mary Kallio (Peter), and Irene Hamilton; and eight nephews: Fr Paul Hamilton; Terry (late Cathy), Joseph (Sherri), Brian (Monica) and John (Elizabeth) Murray; John, Charles and Terry (Linda) Hamilton; many grand nieces and nephews, and several great grand nieces and nephews, along with other dear relatives from the Alarie, Hamilton and Scanlan families.
During her intensely lived long life, Sheila’s priorities were her faith and family, her teaching vocation and her faithful friendships, with great appreciation for the kindnesses of others and vigilant attention to the care of the disadvantaged. She maintained deep, personal connections with her own family, her nieces and nephews and their families, and with her friends, colleagues and former students, and with associates in the social and community groups and organizations in which she engaged. She loved music as a listener and as a participant, having served as a church organist and, frequently, as a choir member, most recently with the Kingston Senior Choristers. In her parish, Sheila was a CWL member and served on parish committees and projects. She also maintained close ties with women religious in Kingston and had long-lasting friendships with many Sisters of Providence and sisters in the Congregation of Notre Dame, along with Religious Hospitallers of Saint Joseph. As an educator, Sheila was a strong advocate for children with special needs and engaged fully in collaboration with her colleagues in their planning and professional associations. Sheila was fun. She loved to laugh, to play cards, to share stories, to travel with friends, and to engage in meaningful conversations, in person or on the phone. She was always interested to keep up on the news of the day and sought to be aware of the well-being of all those she carried in her heart. People knew that she was ‘good to be with’ whenever that was possible.
During Sheila’s medical challenges in the last years, many have offered and provided her practical support and consistent care. She appreciated the doctors, nurses, support workers, PSW’s and the many others, with family members and friends, who have helped her maintain an engaged life. She received magnificent care from the staff at Providence Manor, especially on Sydenham 5. In her most recent need, Sheila’s family are most grateful to those in the ER, on Davies 4 and on Connell 10 at KGH, who treated her with great compassion. You made her last days as good as they could have been and have been very kind to us. Thank you.
A Funeral Mass will be offered for Sheila at Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church, 392 Palace Road, Kingston on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
