In Loving Memory of Michael “Mike” Candy
Michael “Mike” Arthur Candy, cherished husband to his wife Maureen for over 61 years, a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend passed away on October 26, 2024 at the age of 90.
Originally from Abingdon, Great Britain, Mike emigrated to Canada in 1952 to pursue a career. At the time Mike stated that the only profession he wasn’t interested in was banking. Therefore he found a job at Scotiabank and stayed there for his entire adult life working his way up to branch manager, district manager and then finally in a corporate role at Scotiabank’s head office in downtown Toronto. His career started in Ottawa and took him to Montreal, Vancouver, Kingston, Toronto and Bermuda. Apparently, banking wasn’t as bad as he initially thought.
Mike was a passionate reader of history, amassing an impressive library that would rival many public collections. He dedicated himself to gardening and loved the outdoors—fishing, camping and talking leisurely walks. A fervent world traveler, he visited more countries than can be easily counted and enthusiastically shared his passions with his family.
Mike was fastidious about his appearance and was always nattily dressed. He approached his impressive wardrobe in the same way as his gardening, with lots of colour and variety.
An avid sports fan, Mike passionately supported the Toronto Blue Jays and Toronto Maple Leafs fan, and he enjoyed watching and playing golf. He was also a supportive dad and grandfather who instilled his passion for travelling and history. He embraced life with an optimistic curiosity, and a witty spirit. He rarely lost his composure, swore or raised his voice in anger. By all accounts, he was a Good Guy.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Maureen (nee Gargaro), cherished children Lisa and Paul (Anne) and grandchildren Patrick, Joshua and Clark. He was a loved brother to David (Mhorag) and Philip (Anita) and brother-in-law to Walter (Sharleen), Patricia (Len) Christine (Tom) and Michael and uncle to many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents James and Kitty, and sister Jenny (Peter).
Mike leaves behind a legacy of warmth, good humour and boundless love. Though he may no longer be with us, his spirit will forever live on in the hearts of those he touched. He will be deeply missed. Rest in peace.
