Laura Ruth Campling Obituary
CAMPLING, Laura Ruth
Laura died peacefully on February 24th, 2024 at the Fairmount Home in Kingston. Her grandson, Jesse Campling, was with her.
Laura was born May 31st, 1924 at the home of her parents, Norman and Grace Miller, in Kingston. She attended K.C.V.I. and Queen’s University, graduating in 1946 in biochemistry. The same year, she married Charles Campling, a Saskatchewan boy who came to Queen’s on scholarship and was taught mathematics by her father. The young couple then worked and studied in the U.S., where their son Fred was born in 1949. Their daughters, Barbara and Ruth were born in Kingston in 1951 and 1953, where Laura, after a brief stay in Ottawa, spent the rest of her life.
Laura worked at home raising her children until she could manage a part-time job in the Queen’s biochemistry department feeding monkeys an experimental diet. She then returned to Queen’s as a student, earning her education degree, which led to teaching high school science at Regiopolis College. Eventually she wanted another change of career, studied nursing and became an R.N. After a few years of home nursing, she retired.
Laura was close to a large extended family. Beyond her parents and children, there were three sisters, Margaret Smith, Grace Gill and Norma Connor, four brothers-in-law, Reg Smith, Murray Gill, Don Connor and another Fred Campling, and a sister-in-law, Joan Campling. Laura treasured all of them for many years, but all predeceased her.
Laura also treasured all of her sons-in-law and daughters-in-law, John Pym, Chris Pharo, Cynthia Campling (deceased 2014) and Diane Campling. Her grandchildren and their spouses, Jesse Campling (Cheryl Anderson), Emily Campling (Jarno van der Kolk), John Pym Jr., David Pym, Stephanie Rose (Chris Rose) and Elisabeth Pharo (James Cook) brought joy to her life. Her great grandchildren added to that joy – Hannah and Caleb Campling, Charlie and Tess Cook and Finlay Rose.
Laura met her youngest descendants while near-total dementia had taken over her mind, but they were still a joy to her.
Laura also cherished her many nieces and nephews, and loved her cousins and more distant relatives in many places. Her friends were a joy to her, but many predeceased her. Laura was a real people person, always happy to meet someone new and strike up a conversation.
Among Laura’s many interests over the years were hand loom weaving, violin playing (including with the Limestone City Strings) and travel to places like the Galapagos and Africa.
Laura has been cremated. There will be a memorial service Saturday, August 3rd, 2024, 11 a.m. at the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston, followed by a reception and burial of Laura’s ashes at the Cataraqui Cemetery
