Katherine Helen Rose Obituary
Kay Rose (nee Burns)
Dec. 10, 1922 – June 15, 2024
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Kay Rose, wife of the late Jim, ‘Tooty’, Rose; mother of Peter (Sheila) and Jim (Joan); grandmother of Alison (Rory), Fraser (Laura), Ian (Ivana), and Cameron (Kim); and great-grandmother to her beloved little Ford.
Kay was born to Peter and Mary Burns in Courtright, Ontario. She spent her youth in Dresden, Ontario enjoying the company of her big brothers, Jim and Ford, and her beloved sister, Mary. Kay was very popular with her school friends for her access to the pastries at Burns Bakery. Moving to Toronto to be with her sister, Mary, she met ‘Tooty’ Rose. Thus began a love affair that lasted, undiminished, for some 65 years. During WWII, while her husband was in the Medical Corps, Kay worked for the DeHavilland Aircraft Company manufacturing Mosquito pathfinders. When Jim returned from overseas, they moved to North Bay where he achieved his Senior Matriculation and then on to Kingston where he graduated from Queen’s as a mechanical engineer in 1950. Thence they travelled to Timiskaming, Dresden, Sudbury, Vancouver, and Toronto as Dad pursued his career. Finally, they moved to Sharbot Lake and Kingston to be with their grandchildren. After Jim’s death in 2009, she carried on courageously.
Kay was the perfect mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was the glue that held our family together. Her knowledge of family history gave us an appreciation of our Scottish roots. Her steadfast love and sage advice bore us up and gave us direction. She was the moral and spiritual touchstone of our family. Now, at last, she is united with her ‘Tooty’.
Our heartfelt thanks to the caregivers who took care of her at Rosewood, Kingsbridge, and Providence Care Hospital. We are especially grateful to the wonderful staff of the City Park wing at the Arbour Heights Long Term Care Home.
In keeping with Kay’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held in the Chapel of the James Reid Funeral Home (1900 John Counter Blvd., Kingston) on Saturday, July 20th. The visitation will run from 12:00 to 1:00. A brief Chapel Service will be held at 1:00. This will be followed by a Graveside ceremony at Cataraqui Cemetery. Then we will return to the funeral home for a reception and an opportunity to share your memories and stories with family and friends. Dress is business casual.
