Judith Elaine Brown Obituary
Judith (Judi) Elaine Brown
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Judith (Judi) Brown (née Wellman). Judith passed away peacefully at Providence Care Hospital on October 11, 2024 at the age of 81. She was the wife of the late John Albert Brown and will be dearly missed by her children Andrew (Ahmet), Jason, Jerome (Kerrie) and Michelle; by her cherished grandchildren Malika, Kya, Quincy, Jaiden and Leah; beloved sister-in-law Dianne, nieces Jennifer, Deanna and their families; as well as extended family and friends.
Judith was born in Bermuda, daughter of Harry and Marion; and sister to Carolyn (the late Myron), Arthur (Ernestine), the late Calvin, Jean (the late Ross), the late Philip (Dianne), and Norman. She immigrated to Canada in pursuit of higher education and made Kingston, Ontario her home for over 50 years.
Judi was passionate about public education. She was an educator and taught in the prison system, special education, the public school system and the McArthur Faculty of Education. After her retirement, she taught abroad in Egypt and in China before coming back home to Kingston. She remained active and was elected as a public school board trustee in 2018 and 2022.
Judi’s life was a testament to her love for travel, culture, and community. Passionate about exploring the world and celebrating its diversity, she brought a spirit of inclusivity wherever she went. Judi had a unique ability to bring people together, creating connections that transcended borders. Her warmth and openness were especially felt by newcomers to Canada, as she took great care in easing them into Canadian life, ensuring they felt welcomed and supported.
Her involvement in the St. Andrew’s by the Lake church community was another cornerstone of her life. Judi’s unwavering commitment to helping others touched countless lives, whether through her acts of kindness or her charismatic presence. She will be remembered not only for the impact she had on individuals, but also for the sense of belonging she fostered within her community.
Judi will be fondly remembered for her unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. For decades, she passionately brought Black history to life in Canada, sharing stories and deepening understanding and appreciation across communities. As a founding member of Kingston’s Afro-Caribbean community association, Judi played a vital role in creating spaces where culture could thrive.
A Graveside Service will be held on Thursday, October 17, 2024 at 2pm, at Cataraqui Cemetery, Kingston. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date. Those wishing to make donations are encouraged to give to the Robert Sutherland Scholarship Fund at Queen’s University or Operation Smile.
