John William O’Brien Obituary
John William O’Brien, affectionately known as Jack, passed peacefully on August 10th 2024, at 83 years young at Kingston General Hospital. He was a husband, father, grandfather and great friend to many.
Jack was born in Belleville, Ontario on November 17th, 1940, to Francis Gerald O’Brien and Dorothy Christopher. Jack married Margaret Jean O’Brien (Jean) on July 1st, 1961, in London Ontario. His military career moved him around to various locations such as Germany, Cornwall ON, London ON, CFB Bordan and settled in Kingston in 1978.
Jack retired after 30 years of Military service in 1986 as a Master Warrant Officer. He served with the Royal Canadian Regiment. He received the Canadian Decoration, UNFICYP, Peacekeeping medal and the SSM to name a few. After 30 years of military services Jack became a woodworker and gentleman farmer with O’Brien Farm Market, which he ran for another 25 years. He finally retired for good at 72 years of age.
Jack was an avid hunter and fisherman, and he loved spending time out on his boat. His personal best was a 52lb muskellunge that he never got tired of talking about. He loved to cook, especially fish fry’s and pancakes for his grandkids. Jack ran for city council and was president of Army Navy Club and also ran the local chapter of the RCR Association.
His memory will be forever held in the hearts of his surviving family: his wife Jean; his children Sherry (Tim) Aylesworth and Dan (Louise) O’Brien; his grandsons Zachary and Jesse (Andi) and his granddaughters Keely (Leo) and Tara (Nick); his sister Margaret McLeod and step-sister Shirley Hamilton; He was brother-in-law to Mary Ann and Ron (deceased), June and Bill (deceased), Bob and Debbie, and Bonnie and Dave, and uncle to many nieces and nephews. Sadly, he was predeceased by his parents and his step-sister Sharon Shaw.
Visitation will be August 15th 2024, from 3:00 – 5:00 PM and to 7:00 to 9:00 PM at James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd, Kingston, Ontario.
A service to celebrate Jack’s life will be held on August 16th 2024, at 2:00 PM at James Reid Funeral Home at 1900 John Counter Blvd, Kingston, Ontario with a reception to follow at Legion 560, 734 Montreal Street, Kingston, ON.
In lieu of flowers, donations are welcome to the Kidney Foundation of Canada or to UHKF – Providence Care Hospital.
