In Loving Memory of Joan Zeiger
Joan Zeiger (nee Miles) peacefully passed away on November 5, 2023 at Kingston General Hospital. She was 83. She is survived by her loving husband, John Zeiger, and her children, Shelley Waterhouse and Gary Zeiger (April ). Joan was also a cherished grandmother to Michael Young (Gen), Christopher Zeiger (Katie) and Brandon Zeiger (Ciara) and great-grandmother to Tallulah and Gregory, bringing joy to multiple generations. She leaves behind her brother and best friend, Robert Miles, and is fondly remembered by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joan’s life began in Montreal, where she learned about the blessings of family and friends, the importance of resilience and an appreciation for the simple things in life. As a young woman, she started working at The Bank of Montreal as a page girl, moving into clerical and bookkeeping roles, and building a successful career in accounting. She liked to tell people about the job she held at Susan Van Heusen fashions where she was a bookkeeper but was often asked to model the fashions for department store buyers. She also relished in her memories of the numerous dance contests she participated in with friends and won during that time.
Upon moving to Kingston, Joan built a thriving community of friends and continued to make a difference through her work. She was immensely proud of her time at Tercentennial Lodge, a home for handicapped and mental health patients, where she worked with kindness and support.
Joan had a remarkable ability to connect with people from all walks of life. Her warm conversations and sense of humour made strangers feel like lifelong friends and her welcoming nature endeared her to everyone she met.
Throughout her life, Joan pursued her many passions, whether it was in ceramics, painting, kayaking or friendly Scrabble matches where she delighted in creating clever words, often persuading her opponents to accept them.
She relished annual family vacations to Maine, where the real beneficiaries were the family pets. Joan’s love and kindness extended to animals in need within her community, where she helped lost or abandoned pets by setting up shelters and providing food.
Above all, Joan found the greatest joy in the company of her family and friends. Her devotion to her husband, John, was unwavering, and her children were her pride and joy. She offered love, guidance, and support to all, exemplifying kindness and family values. Her home was always a haven for those in need and her warmth touched the hearts of everyone who knew her.
Though Joan’s absence leaves a void in our hearts, her legacy of cherished memories reminds us to live life to the fullest. The family expresses its heartfelt gratitude to all those who provided their support during this challenging time.
They also extend their sincere gratitude to the staff of Davies 5 at Kingston General Hospital for their exceptional care, ensuring Joan’s final days were peaceful and comfortable. For those to wish to do so, donations can be made to the Kingston Humane Society in Joan’s name.
With love and remembrance, Joan’s spirit lives on in our hearts.
A visitation will be held at the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd on Friday, November 17, 2023, from 12:30 until the Chapel service at 1:30 pm. Immediately following the service a reception will be held in the James Reid Reception center.
