Dick Berry Obituary
In Loving Memory of Richard (Dick) Nelson Berry
April 19, 1952 – February 11, 2024
It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Dick Berry. Dick passed away at home, on the farm on Wolfe Island on February 11, 2024. The farm was always Dick’s sanctuary, the place he could most be himself.
Dick will be missed by many. He is survived by his wife Jane Law and his son James. Although separated by many miles, the distance did not diminish the love shared by the three of them. Dick is predeceased by his father Jim and will be deeply missed by our mother Elaine and myself, his sister Linda (Neale). He will be remembered fondly by many nieces and nephews and other family members, and numerous friends and neighbours on Wolfe Island.
Dick was born in Kingston and grew up on Wolfe Island where he lived into his golden years. He was an incredibly talented man, an amazing artist, a skilled craftsman and an avid reader. Dick is well known for building furniture in his workshop, log homes during his contractor years or his biggest endeavour, building The Pan Chancho Bakery & Cafe in Kingston, ON. Dick was a devoted Islander and always there to lend a hand to a neighbour in need or put on a pot of coffee for any and all who dropped in for a visit. His workshop was a happy gathering place for many. Whether people needed help with a project or to simply use his tools and avail themselves of his abundant knowledge of carpentry, he was always happy to oblige.
Dick was never one to want the attention on himself. In lieu of a service, his family encourages his friends, neighbours and fellow Islanders to celebrate his life and honour his memory with a visit to The Pan Chancho Bakery, an Art Gallery, raise a mug of his favourite Starbucks french roast coffee or simply relax, reflect and enjoy a novel as Dick did so often.
His family would like to extend a sincere and heartfelt thank you to our shared friends and neighbours on the Island and to The Lodge who have all been incredibly helpful during this difficult time. We all share the loss and grieve together for this wonderful man, Dick Berry. May he rest in peace.
If so desired, memorial donations may be made in Dick’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Canadian Mental Health Association.
