Desmond Geoffrey Kimber Obituary
Desmond Geoffrey Kimber
1923-2024
Peacefully in his sleep, Desmond passed away on January 8, 2024 at the age of 100.
Predeceased by his dearest wife Kathleen (2020) and his cherished daughter Anne Jones (2021). He is survived by his beloved children Shane Kimber (Josephine), Deirdre Pelow (John), and Maeve McLatchie (Bill). Much loved Pappy to Siobhan Jones, Maeve Larkin (Jason), Alanna McLatchie (Rob), Ian McLatchie and Connell Pelow. Remembered with great fondness by his son-in-law Gord Jones. Also predeceased by his parents Jack and Anna Kimber, and his sisters Jacqueline Ahlgrim and Eleanor Kimber.
Desmond was born in Yorkshire, England, but spent much of his life in Galway, Ireland, a place to which he returned regularly. He attended University College, Galway, and earned a degree in Civil Engineering before immigrating to Canada in 1957. His early years in Canada were spent in northern Ontario, before he and Kathleen settled on the more temperate climate of Kingston, Ontario, where he continued his career as a Professional Engineer with the Ontario Ministry of the Environment.
Upon retirement, Des enjoyed many years of good health which allowed him to travel with Kathleen, and take up new hobbies such as gardening and cooking, and spend more time with his grandchildren.
Des, who never looked his age, lived in his own home for 99 years, and he made a concerted effort throughout his life to exercise his mind, body, and spirit. An avid reader, there was always an eclectic assortment of books at his side, ranging from collections of Irish poetry to a history of calculus.
Most importantly, Des, a true gentleman, impressed all he met with his gentle, kind, and courteous nature, as well as his keen intelligence and quick sense of humour. He was the light and heart of our family, and family was paramount to him. He treated us with great love and respect, a model of a truly good person. For his five grandchildren, there was no one like Pappy, and he had a loving and unique relationship with each one of them.
Des lived his final months at Kingsbridge Retirement Community, where he was treated with love and compassion by the attentive and supportive staff. Many thanks also to the personal support workers from St. Elizabeth Health Care, the nurses from CBI, and Andree Pendergast of Home and Community Care. A special thank you also to Kim Milks who cared for both Des and Kathleen in their final years.
There will be a visitation at the James Reid Funeral Home, 1900 John Counter Blvd., on Wednesday, January 17, 2024 from 4:00- 7:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 18th at 11:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, 490 Days Road, followed by interment in Glenhaven Memorial Gardens, Glenburnie.
Memorial donations, if so desired, may be made to The Partners in Mission Food Bank, or the St. Vincent de Paul Society of Kingston.
