Clifford “Nobby” George Clark Obituary
Clark, Clifford George (“Nobby”), born November 7, 1927, to George and Edith in Whittle Sea, England passed away after a brief illness at KGH on March 16, 2024 at the age of 96.
Cliff was predeceased by his first wife, Mabel, by his partner later in life, June McCormack (nee Patterson), and by his stepson Bill Woods and his sister Joan. He will be greatly missed by stepchildren Michael Woods, Julie (Daryl) Carr and their children Andrew and Kaitlyn; also fondly remembered by niece Sonia (Andy) Hayward and their children. Nobby will also be greatly missed by his longtime friend, Chris (Dianne) Hammond. Nobby and Chris were fellow musicians and sports car enthusiasts. Nobby also looked forward to this time of year “stoking the fire” for Chris’ maple syrup production.
Cliff joined the British Army as an apprentice machinist at the age of 14, then travelled with the Army to the Middle East after WWll as a machinist and later as a British Military Band member. He moved to Canada in 1953 and worked for Massey Ferguson before joining the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals Band (later the Canadian Forces Vimy Band). Nobby was a skilled sax and flute player, and also combined his musical and machinist expertise to become a Master Musical Instrument Repair Technician, with recognition for this attested by his fellow musicians when he retired from the Canadian Armed Forces in 1977. This led to his musical instrument repair business in Kingston, including for the Limestone District School Board. Nobby was a teacher of music to many students. He ran his business until he was 92.
Cliff travelled extensively throughout the Middle East, Europe, the US and Canada during his time with the British Army and Canadian Armed Forces. He was a collector of antiques and treasures. Nobby enjoyed rides in his TR8 sports car along the Bath Road to Picton, on the Thousand Island Parkway to Rockport and to all outlying areas around Kingston taking in the scenery with stops at antique stores and local pubs.
Special mention to his neighbours and friends, Guy and Deborah Serre for their ongoing support, and to his Family Physician, Dr. Christina Quinlan and to Dr. Heather Johnson (KGH) for their compassion and care.
Cheers to you Cliff! Cheers to you Nobby! You are forever in our hearts.
Donations in memory of Cliff Nobby Clark can be made in support of musicians, in particular for local bands and school bands, for example Kingston’s Musical Instrument Lending Library.
The family invites you to a Celebration of Nobby’s Life on Saturday, May 4th, 2024 from 2:00 – 5:00 pm at James Reid Funeral Home, Cremation and Reception Centre. Please enter through the rear doors.
