Barbara Reynolds Obituary
Barbara Ann Reynolds
December 24, 1935 – November 25, 2023
In both sorrow and celebration of a life well-lived, we mark the passing of Barbara Ann Reynolds (née Millar) at her home at the Waterford Residence in Kingston, Ontario.
She was the devoted only child of Charles and Frances Millar. She is survived by the love of her life, Bradley Howard Reynolds. She was the proud mother of Mark David Reynolds (and his wife, Anne-Marie, and step-daughter, Natalie) and Heather Toth (and her husband, Paul). In Barb’s eyes, the sun revolved around grandchildren, Lindsay Toth (Chris Wong), Joel Toth and Andrew Toth. Recently, her heart was stolen by Rhys and Caia Toth-Wong, her great-grandchildren.
A born and raised Kingston girl, she grew up at Knapp’s Boats marina by the causeway bridge, which was owned by her parents. As an only child, she found companionship with the various stray animals that befriended the little girl with corkscrew curls. At the marina, she met many different people and learned tolerance and acceptance that she carried with her throughout life.
Barb attended KCVI high school. Barb remembered fondly her “informative” years in Ottawa attending Carlton University and Ottawa Teachers College, earning her teaching diploma there. Her teaching career was short – but productive, having met her future husband at Barrifield School in Kingston. Barb left teaching to raise her family but remained a lifelong volunteer, donating many hours to school libraries, the Ontario Hospital and the Loyalist Community Sharing Centre.
Barb and Brad were married for 61 years. Brad adored her and doted on her. They enjoyed quiet companionship. The mutual joy derived from an ordinary life was what made their relationship so extraordinary. It is the greatest tragedy that they spent the last fourteen years separated, as Brad lives in Trillium long-term care. Despite dementia, he always recognized Barb, saying, “How could I ever forget those blue eyes?”.
Barb was a present and quietly supportive mother. She never (well, rarely) told her children what to do but she was busy in the background making sure they had all they needed to succeed. She prepared lunch at home every day for Mark and Heather, providing a little respite in the middle of the school day. Barb encouraged the kids’ passion for music, playing tapes together in the kitchen and shuttling them frequently to band practices. She was also the family historian and storyteller, and kept meticulous journals.
Brad took an early retirement and together they had the best 15 years of their lives. They travelled extensively with a group of retired teachers, visiting places such as Fiji, New Zealand, Portugal, and South Africa. They also took numerous driving trips through Canada and the U.S. At home, they split their time between their home in Amherstview and their cottage in Verona. Barb loved being in nature. She was always on the lookout for wildlife while boating, walking or driving. Like Brad, she was a “putterer”, always busy tending her cottage garden or baking favourite desserts for people she loved. Barb’s social network included friends from United Church Women, lifelong teaching friends, neighbours, and people they met on their travels. Barb and Brad’s favourite way to spend time was with their three grandchildren. The grandkids will remember fishing, swimming, picking berries and baking with her.
There will be a joint Memorial Service for Barb and Brad, after his passing. We will send them off together, just as they would want. Details will be announced at a later date.
