John Thomas O’Brien
June 5, 1942-January 8, 2024
Surrounded by his family after a short but courageous battle with cancer, John passed away peacefully in his 82nd year.
Loving Husband and best friend to Linda (Petch) for 58 years.
Devoted Father to Patty (Greg) Huss and Jamie O’Brien.
Beloved Grandfather to Mackenzie and Caitlin Huss and Hannah and Sean O’Brien.
Cherished Brother-in-law to John and Debbie Petch.
Predeceased by his sister Suzanne O’Brien who John and Linda cared for, for over 30 years.
John retired from Stelco in 2000 after 35 years of service, 29 of those years in the Metallurgical Department.
John and Linda enjoyed spending winters in Charleston, South Carolina with Jamie and his family as well as summers around their backyard. At family gatherings you’d usually hear him playing his beautiful Young Chang piano. He always cherished the annual Sparrow Lake vacation at Bayview Wildwood with their special Bayview Family, where you’d find him at a Euchre table enjoying a few pints or fishing.
John was an avid golfer and had a particular passion for working on antique cars. Especially his 1965 Chevy Corvette and his most recent project, a 1969 Chevy Camaro.
O’B also loved playing hockey and spent many years refereeing with the Stoney Creek Referees Association where he has many lifelong friends.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to all the wonderful staff at Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice.
A celebration of John’s life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for donations to Dr. Bob Kemp Hospice or the Canadian Cancer Society.
