John Henry Foley (Jack)
1932 – 2024
On Thursday, May 16 we said good-bye to our beloved father, at the age of 91.
Jack was happily married to Marilyn (McDermott), his high school sweetheart for over 50 years, until her passing in 2007. He is lovingly remembered by his children Donna, Suzanne (Dwayne), and John (Melissa). He was so very proud of his grandchildren Joanna (Manuel), Borden (Erin), Tyler (Victoria), Alicia and Adam. The absolute apple of his eye were his great grandchildren Jack and Charlie. He was looking forward to the arrival of Tyler and Vicky’s first child in June.
Both Jack and Marilyn came from large families and had forty-two nieces and nephews between them. He is predeceased by his sisters Margaret (Larry Dorman), Marietta, Rita (Gord Mackan), Geraldine (Gerald Whitney), Dolores (Richard Mallon), and his brother William. He is survived by his sister-in-law, Anne Foley, and brothers-in-law, John (Sandra) McDermott, and Tom (Pat) McDermott.
Jack was born on August 8, at home on Dundurn Street in Hamilton; the first boy with five older sisters to dote on him. His brother Bill joined the family 5 years later. He loved nothing more than telling us about the hijinks they got into when they were young, as well as stories of working at their family grocery store.
Jack and Marilyn got married in 1956 and became a part of the Canadian Martyrs’ Church community, volunteering many hours and making life-long friends.
Jack was the Coordinator of Shipping at Stelco until his retirement in 1987. He was a great baseball player in his youth and later in life loved to golf. Both he and Marilyn followed the Blue Jays faithfully. They travelled together, especially loving their trips to Hawaii. Jack was known for enjoying long drives in the countryside and rarely used a map as he knew every back road there was. After Marilyn passed, his sister Margaret was his steady companion on these adventures. At any time, there was nothing Jack liked better than a good game of euchre with his relatives.
For the last five years he has lived gracefully at Meadowlands Retirement Home, where he made many new friends.
Jack will be remembered as a true ‘gentleman’ with a good sense of humour who loved his family fiercely. He has left us all with a wonderful legacy.
Dad, your stories will live on through your children, grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. We miss you, Dad.
If you so desire, donations to The Stroke Recovery Burlington (502-3055 Glencrest Rd. Burlington, ON. L7N 2H4), cheques payable to March of Dimes Canada, would be appreciated by the family.
Cremation Services were held. Memorial Visitation Will be held on Friday, August 9, 2024, at Canadian Martyrs Church Hamilton (1349 Main St. W. Hamilton, ON.) from 1:15 p.m. until time of Memorial Mass at 2 p.m. Procession to Resurrection Cemetery to follow.
