Obituary
With heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of our dear father and nonno Enzo Scarponi, on October 31, 2024 at the age of 95, after a life well lived surrounded by his loving family.
Enzo was born in Marsciano, Perugia, Umbria and spent most of his childhood and youth in Lanciano, Chieti, Abruzzo where he met his love Lucia. In 1958 he followed his love and immigrated to Canada settling in Hamilton to marry and start their family. Despite the challenges that came with being a new immigrant, he successfully obtained his BA and Masters (Sociology) from McMaster University; an achievement his family were incredibly proud of.
As a Canadian citizen he was grateful for the opportunities his new country provided him but his love for his birthplace always remained. His desire to celebrate his Italian heritage at home in family life and within the community was strong. Throughout his life in Canada he held various positions dedicated to preserving his love for the Italian culture. He taught conversational Italian at Mohawk College and worked with the Centro Scuola Dante Alighieri in Hamilton teaching Italian to elementary school children. He used media to share this passion by producing “Acrobaleno Italiano” for cable 14 and writing articles for Italian language newspapers. Enzo was a founding member of the Hamilton Associazione Alpini – a hat he wore proudly! He was first president of the Italian Canadian Congress Hamilton Branch and secretary coordinator of the first convention of Abruzzesi in Canada. His work at the Hamilton Multicultural Centre and Costi Immigration Services in Toronto helped new immigrants settle in Canada just as he did decades earlier. In 2018 his contributions to the Italian community were recognized and he was honoured with the Johnny Lombardi Italian Heritage Award of Distinction.
He filled his retirement years by working part time at the local Italian Vice Consulate Office and taking yearly trips to his beloved Italy. Our babbo was a people person who enjoyed the art of conversation, always ready to discuss politics, current events, or his love of animals. He lived his life to the fullest always on the go and only slowing down in his final weeks, his motto was that in life you have to keep moving.
Enzo is predeceased by his loving wife Lucia (nee Giardino) of 54 years. Dearest Babbo of Paola, Marco, Censina (Leonardo Lepore) and Antonella (Tony Cinquina). Cherished Nonno of Joshua, Lucas, Alyssa, Sara and Matthew. Enzo is survived by his brother Franco and his adoring niece Marcella (Giuliano Di Gregorio) of Lanciano, Italy. He was brother-in-law to the late Grace ( the late Carlo) of Italy, the late Elodia (the late Mike), the late Pio (Anna), Gina (the late Joe) and Tony (the late Margaret). He leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews in Canada and Italy.
Visitation will be held at FRISCOLANTI FUNERAL CHAPEL; 43 Barton Street East, on Sunday, November 3, from 2-5 and 6-8 p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Annunciation Of Our Lord Church, 280 Limeridge Road West, on Monday, November 4, 2024 at 10 a.m. Entombment to follow at Bayview Mausoleum.
