Hanta, Elisabeth (Betty)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elisabeth (Betty) Hanta on November 13, 2023. She leaves behind her loving husband, Frank. Her sons, Frank and Andrew. Her daughter-in-law’s, Karin and Judi. Her grandchildren, Sarah, Gregory, Christina, Jessica and Andrea as well as her great-grandchildren, Oliver and Lily. She will also be greatly missed by her cousin Mary Treier, other relatives and all of her friends and neighbours who were like a second family. Elisabeth was born in Budaors, Hungary on August 10, 1933, only child to Paul Braun and Elisabeth Braun (nee Roth). During the war, she and her mother were displaced to Germany and then she immigrated to Canada. Her father died as a POW in the war. In Canada, she found the love of her life, Frank Hanta, and married him in 1956. While raising her children, Betty took on a job as a sales clerk at Eaton’s in downtown Hamilton. She prided herself in her work, serving customers in first the paint and wallpaper department and then the sporting goods department. Betty also prided herself on her work in her kitchen. She was an awesome cook and baker. Her schnitzels, cabbage rolls and spaetzli were the envy of all. Not to mention the many German and Hungarian baked goods. Her grandchildren will fondly remember the “cheese bread” from the cottage. Betty fought a hard battle with cancer and tried with all her might to stay around to look after her family especially her beloved Frank. The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Juravinski Cancer Centre, especially Dr. Clare Reade, nurses Danielle and Erin, and commissioner Phil who was always there to greet mom with a smile and compassion. We would also like to thank her family doctor, Dr. Lita Cameron for her dedication and many home visits. Visitation will be held at PX Dermody 796 Upper Gage Ave. (between Mohawk and Fennell) on Sunday November 19, 2023 from 2:00-5:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, 260 Herkimer on Monday November 20, 2023 at 12:00 pm. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in memory to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Juravinski Cancer Centre. Notes of sympathy and condolence may be made at www.dermodys.com
