Czesława Teresa Czachowicz (née Getka)
March 27, 1936 – June 18, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the unexpected passing of Czesia, our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Czesia died peacefully at home in the evening of Tuesday, June 18, 2024, in her 89th year.
Born March 27, 1936, Czesia was the daughter of Władysław and Aleksandra (née Myśliwiec) Getka. She was preceded in death by her older siblings Kazimiera Jabłecka (2024), Kazimierz Getka (1987), and Władysław Getka (2024). She is reunited with Mieczysław “Mietek” (2006), her loving husband of 49 years.
Czesia is survived by her daughter Bożena Bednarska (late Ryszard Bednarski), her grandchildren Ania and Ela (Stefano Bozzo), and her great-grandchildren Olivia and Evelyn, who will remember her fondly as their adoring “Mama”, “Babcia Czesia” and “Prababcia”, respectively. Although we mourn the loss of our beloved Czesia, we celebrate the lifetime of wonderful memories we have shared.
In school, Czesia studied horticulture, her passion, but was inspired to change her career to nursing after her mother fell ill and needed her care. She continued on the nursing path working at an immunization clinic until her early retirement at age 55.
Her love of horticulture persisted, however. She enjoyed long walks through the forest searching for wild mushrooms, and tending lovingly to her vegetable and flower gardens “na działce” (at the cottage). She also helped take care of her daughter’s and granddaughter’s gardens, imparting much wisdom over the years with her “green thumb”.
Czesia had a beautiful voice and loved to sing and dance. She was also an extremely talented knitter, making sweaters, hats, scarves and mittens with intricate designs and patterns, as well as, housecoats and blankets for her grandkids, and of course, her famous “kapcie” (house slippers). She was also known for her “naleśniki” (crêpes with sweet cottage cheese filling), and would often be seen standing at the stove frying her signature breakfast dish. During any downtime, you’d see her sitting quietly reading Polish magazines, working on her cross-word puzzles, or simply napping.
After her husband’s passing, Czesia would visit her family in Canada almost annually, and remained here permanently since 2019, her daughter’s house becoming her home away from home. She enjoyed travelling and has checked off several destinations off her bucket-list, specifically, Denmark, Germany, Canadian cities of Hamilton, Kitchener, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Ottawa and Quebec City, as well as, New York City and “słoneczna” (sunny) Florida in the United States.
She loved spending time with her family and was always enthusiastic for whatever ideas her granddaughters came up with. Whether tent camping at local conservations areas, going to the theatre or concerts, tourist outings, or daytrips with the great-grandkids to the park or zoo, she was always ready for adventure. Even getting older did not slow her down much – all she needed was a folding chair and some shade, and she was ready to sit to chat with her granddaughters and enjoy watching her great-grandkids play, or just nap in the breeze!
Despite the language barrier, Prababcia Czesia was able to create strong bonds with her “prawnuczki” (great grandchildren), Olivia and Evelyn, engaging them by reading to them in Polish, playing catch, colouring or doing crafts side by side, or just snuggling watching TV. She was always fully present giving them unconditional love and undivided attention.
Czesia will be fondly remembered as a sweet gentle soul with an easy-going nature and a good sense of humour. Her positive attitude was contagious, and you could not help but laugh and smile in her presence. She will be missed dearly by her entire family and many treasured friends in Poland and Canada.
Czesia leaves behind a legacy of precious memories and will be in our hearts forever!
Family and friends are invited to attend visitation at P.X. Dermody Funeral Home (796 Upper Gage Avenue, Hamilton, ON, between Mohawk and Fennell) on Friday, June 28, 2024 between 9:30 am to 11:00 am, followed by prayer service at 11:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Royal Botanical Gardens and/or a charity of your choice.
