Saturday, June 8th, 2024, our dear, beautiful Mum, Elizabeth Ann Bishop (nee Freeland), 84 – our family anchor, our biggest cheerleader, our friend, a woman of deep love of and for her family, a woman of substance and dignity – entered into the presence of the Lord, in eternal peace. Mum’s unwavering love and devotion to her family will be deeply missed and cherished.
Mum was so very proud of her three children: Julia (late husband Keith) and Ken; David and his wife, Wendy; Andrew and his wife, Joy. Mum’s life was further enriched by the wonder of her 5 grandchildren: Matthew, Jessica, Jonathan, Justin and Zachary. Mum adored her great grandson, Cliff, and was lovingly anticipating the arrival of great grandson, Henry. Elizabeth was predeceased by the father of her Children, John George Bishop.
Elizabeth was born in London, England to Roy Hogarth and Dorothy Louise (nee Foster) Freeland. Elizabeth treasured her late sister, Marjorie, her late brother, John (Lyn, nee Sawyer) and her two nephews Matt and Paul. Elizabeth, Marjorie and John are reunited once again.
Elizabeth immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1962. Elizabeth moved to Arnprior and married in 1963 and started her family in 1965. Moving to Haileybury in 1969, opened the door to a 49-year adventure raising her children, making friends and serving her community. Elizabeth volunteered with many initiatives and organizations with the goal of a better life and community experiences for all: one of the founding members of the Pied Piper Nursery School; on the Board of the Haileybury Scouting Association; committee member for the establishment of the Women’s Crisis Center; 50 years of service with the IODE (a National women’s service group dedicated to education, children and community services); Haileybury Centennial Committee member; Communities in Bloom Committee member; served on the Ontario Library Service Board of Governors; organized the Temiskaming Art Gallery’s Annual Garden Tour fundraiser; co-ordinated the annual “Ghost of the Hardy Boys Short Story Writing Contest for youth…to name only a few. Over the years, Elizabeth work as church secretary for St. Andrew’s United Church, Haileybury Public Library – Librarian and CEO, Curator of the Temiskaming Art Gallery, and Real Estate Agent, all while curating friendships and connections that lasted a lifetime. In 2018, Elizabeth moved to North Bay where she enjoyed volunteering with the North Bay Heritage Gardeners, playing bridge and making new friends. As a young woman, Elizabeth spent considerable time on the water sailing. This love of the water was of great comfort; Elizabeth thoroughly enjoyed her daily walks along the shore of Lake Nipissing and admired the tranquil, ever changing lake vistas that stretched out before her.
Elizabeth’s life was enriched by friendships lasting from childhood friends to those who still hold her dear. Although too many to mention, and of course many have preceded Mum on her journey, we would like to thank Sheila, Diane, Jennifer and Jake, Pat (Doug), Jane, Muriel, Rose, Monica and Reverand Linda White for their support, friendship and love. You all blessed Mum with a gift so rich and we cannot thank you enough.
In accordance with Elizabeth’s wishes, cremation has taken place. Family and friends will gather for Elizabeth’s Celebration of Life at the Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Haileybury on Saturday, August 10th at 11:30am. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Haileybury Heritage Museum or the IODE – Dr. Herbert A. Bruce Chapter. North Bay would be appreciated and will be co-ordinated by Buffam Leveille Funeral Home.
