Douglas Hobden, age 56, passed away peacefully in the presence of his loving family at the Temiskaming Hospital, following a courageous year long battle with cancer.
Leaving with broken hearts, his wife and best friend of 23 years, Kerry, and his beloved daughter Amelia. He was predeceased by his mother, Anne Hobden, father-in-law Eric Avery, and his adored pup Maggie.
Doug was blessed with a large family and many friends who will miss him dearly. His father, Peter Hobden (Shirley), sister Kim (Jack), brothers David (Helen) and Bruce. Mother-in-law, Sonia Avery, brothers-in-law Tony (Stacey) and Adam (Angela). In addition to his beloved aunts, uncles and cousins, he leaves behind nieces, nephews, great-nieces and a special great-nephew: Laura, Anna (Jason), Caleb, Tyler, Kyle (Ashley), Ashley (Alex), Jordan (Stephanie), Ryan, Carly, Courtney (Aaron), Jacob, Joshua, William and Isabell. Alice, Zoey, Zara, Ruth, Cora, Devyn and Gerard.
He will be forever missed by his best companions Cassidy, Mittens, Smudge, Allie and GV who brought him so much joy these last few months.
Doug was a strong, intelligent, gentle soul with a biting sense of humour. He loved to cheer on the Jays and Leafs, and was passionate about music – particularly the Grateful Dead, who he saw perform too many times to count. He loved to spend time gardening and tending to his yard, but also enjoyed travel.
During his illness, Doug was very fortunate to have support, especially from Jordan Hobden, Gerard Hobden and Ben Schapelhouman who were always there when needed. His long-time friends Kevin Ritchie and Bob Fowler, who stayed in close contact despite the distance. Sharren Reil, who lovingly cared for his dear pets. Paula Davey and Jennifer Pickard who brought food and checked on and supported Kerry. John Etches, John Ellis and everyone at Hill’s Lake and North Bay hatcheries for keeping in touch regularly throughout the entire journey. Greg and Marita Kennedy for their help with the yard.
Doug was fortunate to have excellent support and medical care from all of the staff at Temiskaming Hospital, especially the ladies in the chemotherapy room. His oncology team Drs. Emack and Shehata, home care nurses and support staff, Amy McKeever, and Krissy Greene.
A special thank you to Dr. Stacy Desilets, whose care and compassion for our whole family made the difficult times more bearable.
At Doug’s request, cremation has taken place. A gathering to remember him and celebrate his life will be held later in the spring. Donations in his memory can be made to the Temiskaming Hospital Foundation.
Love’s real, not fade away.
