Carl Tholby Burk of New Liskeard, Ontario passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family at the Temiskaming Hospital on Monday, May 27, 2024 at the age of 86.
Carl married the love of his life, Mary Glassford (deceased) on May 17, 1958 at the Harris Township United Church, and together they raised three children: Robert (Wendy), Nancy (David Acland) and Wendy (Robert Wagg). In his final years he was lucky enough to be blessed with a second love, Marilyn Little. Their longtime friendship blossomed into something very special during their time together at Northdale Manor.
Loving grandfather of Erin Guillemette (Kris Dittmann), Alex Guillemette (Hillary), Rachel Burk (Jeremy Charette), Jonathan Acland and Christopher Wagg. Great grandfather of Gabriel Guillemette, Alaric Dittmann and Elena Dittmann.
He was born on July 13, 1937 to Eldridge and Lula Burk (predeceased) and is survived by his sisters Margaret Sutton and Grace Darling (Al) and sister-in-law Nonie Burk. He was predeceased by his brother Ken and brother-in-law William Sutton.
Carl is survived by his in-laws Jean Glassford, Elsie Baker, William Glassford Jr. (Elaine), Bob Glassford (Linda), Lucy Robertson and Peter Glassford. He was predeceased by his brothers-in-law Ronald Glassford Sr., Randy Robertson and Gerald Baker.
Carl started his career in Kapuskasing with Ontario Hydro as a Lineman in 1957 and relocated to New Liskeard in 1967. He spent 26 years as a Lineman and 9 years in Customer Service with Ontario Hydro, retiring after 35 years of service in 1992. He enjoyed working for Hydro and made many good friends throughout his career.
Carl loved to dance, especially square dance. At community and family events you would often see him not only dancing the square but hear him calling out the square steps and movements. He was an avid gardener and over the years he enjoyed woodworking and carpentry. These passions led him to build the family home as well as the cottage in Harris Township. He was a wealth of information on so many topics and you could always count on him for sound advice. Carl loved to tell stories whether it was something that had happened over his years at Ontario Hydro or a good family tale. What he enjoyed most though, was spending time with family and relaxing and fishing at the cottage. The corn roasts and singalongs at the cottage were a great treat to look forward to as well as Carl’s memorable instructions of how to drive safely down the hill to the lake.
The family would like to thank Dr. Colleen Davies and all the doctors, nurses and staff who cared for Carl in his final days. He was so appreciative of the care that he received from them.
In keeping with Carl’s wishes, there will be no funeral; however, a Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
If desired, donations in memory of Carl can be made to the Temiskaming Hospital Foundation or the Canadian Lung Association. Condolences and tributes can be left at www.buffamleveille.com
