James Andrew Groh, peacefully passed away with his loving family by his side Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at home in Gravenhurst. He was born February 18, 1924, at the family home on Philip Street. He remained a historian and a staunch advocate for his hometown.
Jim’s journey was intertwined with cherished memories and significant milestones. He ventured to Toronto and found love at Woolworth’s on College Street, where he met the love of his life, Madeline Darby. They were united in marriage in 1945, a bond that stood the test of time. Sadly, Madeline departed in 2016 after over 70 years of partnership, during which they nurtured three children together.
Jim showcased his managerial skills at Vincent’s Department Store during the day and served as an assistant manager at the Muskoka Theatre Cinema during the evenings. Later in life, alongside Madeline, they ventured into entrepreneurship by acquiring Barr’s Ladies Wear, successfully operating the business for two decades.
Jim’s passion for theatre shone brightly as he actively participated in productions at the Gravenhurst Opera House. From portraying memorable characters such as Mr. Manningham in “Gas Light” to embodying Dr. W. Chumley in “Harvey,” his contributions were unforgettable. His involvement extended to plays such as “Time Out for Ginger” and “Submerged,” leaving a lasting impact on the local theatre scene.
He read the newspaper every day to keep up with news events and do the crossword. When his grandson became interested in Raptors basketball, he became an avid fan.
He leaves behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him. An exemplary individual, whose quiet strength and unwavering kindness touched many lives.
Jim is preceded in death by his beloved wife Madeline. He was the loving father of Maureen, son-in-law Doug Chamberlain, daughter-in-law Judi (Dan Ostler), grandfather of Aidan, Colin and Meredith, and great-grandfather of Finnley and Ellis. He is predeceased by sons Richard (2020) and Michael (2014). He also leaves behind his dear sister Marie (late Archie Barr) along with nieces, nephews and friends who will miss him dearly.
Services honoring James’s life will take place at Cavill – Turner Funeral Home at 215 Bay Street in Gravenhurst. Visitation will be held from 1:00 PM to 2:00 PM followed by a Memorial Service beginning at 2:00 PM on Thursday, March 14, 2024. Reception at Sawdust City will follow the memorial service.
