Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Brian Cosgrove on September 29th, 2023. He is survived by his wife Nancy with whom he shared 20 years of marriage. He was the loving father of Leah (Shaun) and Michael (Jen) and step-father to Paul (Christa). Brian was the proud grandfather of Adelaide, Hannah, Aidan, Xavier, and Elizabeth.
Brian grew up in Burlington and was the only child of Dorothy and Edward Cosgrove. He graduated from Burlington Central in 1960 and followed in his father’s footsteps by working at Stelco. In 1967 he began a degree at McMaster where he met his first wife, Karen. In his early 20’s, Brian spent some time living in Barbados as well as pursuing his pilot license in Guelph, Ontario. Never one to stay in one place, Brian lived in Milton, Ballinafad, Acton, Georgetown, Rockwood, Guelph, Grand Bend, and Tillsonburg before finally settling down in his hometown of Burlington for the remainder of his years.
Brian began his teaching career at Maplehurst P.S. in Burlington, but spent most of his career teaching at both Stewarttown and Centennial middle schools in Georgetown. If you were his student you probably remember him regularly practising his golf swing with a metre stick. Brian was a devoted volleyball coach, coaching many championship teams at both the school and club levels. For the past few years, he got to revisit his love for the game by watching his granddaughter Adelaide play both competitive beach and court volleyball.
Brian’s teaching career allowed him to spend many summers in one of his favourite places, Lake Weslemkoon. He loved to fish and as a very early riser his whole life, he was often back from his morning fishing trip before anyone else would be awake. Brian was always up for a road trip and his children fondly remember many March Break trips to Myrtle Beach and Florida over the years. These trips would be carefully planned around the weather as Brian was known to pay careful attention to the radar and probably missed his calling as a meteorologist.
In retirement, Brian and Nancy enjoyed many winters in Florida, where they made new friendships over games of euchre, trivia and golf. Brian was a passionate golfer and continued to play the game regularly up until his final year of life. Brian will forever be remembered by his family as a kind, caring man who loved nothing more than spending time with his loved ones.
