In Celebration of
Norma Madeline Warren
September 27, 1926 –
March 7, 2024
Peacefully at the Melnyk Pavilion, St. Joseph’s Health Care Centre, Toronto on March 7, 2024.
Norma is predeceased by her parents Walter E. Warren (1883-1960) and Madeline Patison Warren (née Charlton) (1883 – 1962) and her brothers Walter E. Warren (1912 – 2002) and Charles B. Warren (1915 – 2001).
Aunt to Wendy E. Labbett (Warren) and Sally H. Warren, Great Aunt to David Labbett and Zoe Claire Warren-Schvartz, Great Great Aunt to Quentin Labbett and Charlie Callaghan.
There are a host of Warrens living coast to coast in Canada, all descendants of Norma’s grandfather, Michael Peter Warren (1840 – 1921), a survivor of the Irish Famine, who arrived by ship c. 1850, unaccompanied by immediate family. Norma was known for maintaining family connections and kept in touch with many relatives in Canada and the USA.
Norma received her BA (1948), B.Ed (1960) and M.Ed. (1969) from the University of Toronto. Her career spanned thirty seven years as Teacher, Vice Principal and Principal in Etobicoke Schools. Her lengthy career was held in high regard and one she enjoyed immensely.
As one of thirty-one Etobicoke Senior Women interviewed for the “Celebrate” publication in 2020, she shared her happy childhood growing up in Mimico, filled with sports, ‘big brothers’, and memorable family occasions.
Norma traveled the world with colleagues and friends, living a full and adventurous life. Her interests included extensive travel, music, dance and theatre, summers at the cottage, continuing education, reading and the creation of delicate handwork. Family life was of utmost importance, and she became a genealogist through the creation of an illustrated booklet of the many branched Charlton family tree.
The family extends gratitude to the many friends and neighbours who so generously supported Norma through her later years, and to the staff and doctors at St Joseph’s Melnyk Pavilion.
Her constant companions and friends Joy Bagunu and Daisy Arcega merit special mention and limitless thanks.
Norma specified no funeral service. Cremation arrangements entrusted to Turner and Porter Yorke Chapel.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Norma’s memory may be made to an Arts Organization of your choice.
