Douglas Robertson passed peacefully, with family by his side, on April 3, 2024, at the age of 85. Beloved husband of Elizabeth “Betty” Robertson (nee Marsden) for 62 years. Cherished father to Liane, Beth, and Richard, and father-in-law to Christopher Stevens.
Born in Toronto, Doug was the middle son of William, born in Motherwell, Scotland, and Jessie Robertson (nee Anderson), born in Acton, Ontario. He is predeceased by his parents and older brother, David, and survived by his younger brother, Bob. He is missed by his many nieces, nephews, and other extended family members.
Doug attended Etobicoke Collegiate Institute, where he played football and met his future wife while both were in the tenth grade. After graduation he went to work in sales, but soon followed his entrepreneurial spirit to begin a career in food brokerage. His work took him to Australia, Asia, Europe, the Caribbean, South America, and Central America, as well as across Canada and throughout the United States. Known for his warm and approachable style, he was highly regarded by all, from senior government officials to small business owners like himself, more often relying on a handshake than a contract.
Doug was a lifelong sports fan, a passion he passed along to his three children. He was a lover of dogs, especially Bud, Finnegan, and Teddy. He enjoyed a good steak, a decent Chianti, an aged single-malt scotch, and spending time with his family. But perhaps most importantly, he cared about people – he was genuine in his respect and empathy for others, whether friend or stranger. Pure of heart, Doug’s ability to put others at ease was one of his greatest qualities and he excelled at drawing out the best in people.
The family is grateful for the kindness of those at Extendicare Burloak, who cared for him in his final years with compassion.
Per Doug’s wishes, no service is planned other than a small gathering of family. All are encouraged to leave messages of condolence or share memories at this page.
