Dan, we LOVE you, we will miss you dearly and we will remember so much about you:
… you made everyone around you feel so special. You were selfless, giving and truly took interest in what we were doing. We all thank you for so much great interest you took in all of us. Your curiosity about our lives and how you listened is incredible. Your smile, your belief in all of us made a difference
… you were always generous with love, kind words, curiosity, your time, your listening ear, and even generous tips to servers
… you loved your lattes (especially Birds and Beans) and made all staff feel special
… at work you brought together teams of people to work efficiently together while pulling out their strengths and confidence, you were a 360 degree leader
… you continuously shared fun stories that made us all laugh
… you seemed to know a lot about everything and brought up issues and stories that would inspire great conversations and astonished us with the trivia and what you knew
…. your frustrations were always selfless, focussing on how to make the world a better place, whether it was in the workplace, in politics, at home or in sport
… your values shone through and you lived with the guiding principles of equality, fairness and kindness
… you loved music, literature and poetry. You loved great singer songwriting
… you loved your Irish heritage
… you were athletic, smart and loved playing and watching all sports, including beach and indoor volleyball, tennis, curling, basketball, golf, soccer and football. His main teams: Arsenal, Raptors, Leafs, Bills and anything Canadian
… you were a life learner – listening to many podcasts, learning through experience and always open to learning from to others, you were a true polymath
… you were an educator through and through, you valued education being born into a family of teachers and then trained as a high school teacher, you brought all of these skills into your leadership
… you became senior executive in IT information technology, yet never took any formal training in IT
… you went to “space”, even though you had no formal astronaut training
… you always loved your family and friends and valued this above everything
We will miss you Dan
Dan leaves behind his loving wife Ada Vander Meer, his mother, Rose Marie Hill (neé McCreith), his sister Sharon Hill (who liked to say she was “1 year, 4 months, 23 days, 17 hours and 10 minutes” younger) and her husband William “Bill” Newson.
Dan also immediately fit into and made an impact with Ada’s family. Dan left behind his Mother-in-law: Evelyn Vander Meer (neé Strikwerda), Brothers-in-law: Howard (and Peg); Ted (and Mary), Sisters-in-law: Elsa (and Rob Deyell) and Julie.
He was also immediately loved by Ada’s nephews and nieces and had so much fun with them plus the continually growing number of great nephews and nieces (3 more on the way!).
Howard’s family: Heidi and Louis Belisle (with Felix & Sophie), Peter and Rosanna, Brandon and Mariah (with Chloe), Chelsea.
Ted’s Family: Steve and Sarah (with Millie & Austin), Heather and Mark Snippe (with Trenton, Shane & Jade), Nick and Cassidy, Eric and Mel (with Oliver);
Elsa’s Family: Bethany and Doug McClinsey (with Harper & Sadie), Raela and Ryan Newman, Jolene.
Dan has left behind and made an impact on a great number of family, friends, coworkers and team mates in sports over the years, including his opponents in volleyball (many of whom are counted among his friends)!
We know you will miss Dan greatly. We all will.
