In Celebration of
Astor Hanslep
October 3, 1931 –
October 21, 2023
On the evening of October 21, 2023, Astor passed away at his home as he had wished, surrounded by his beloved family. Astor was born on the island of Hiiuma in Estonia on October 3, 1931, to parents Reinhard and Erna. He was one of four siblings, Hinga (predeceased) (Victor), Aime, and Peter (Kaylene). In September 1944 under the dark of night and by boat, this family escaped the impending invasion of the Russian army and avoided German convoys, and fled to Sweden leaving loved ones and life as they had known far behind. Sweden provided refuge for the next 6 years at which point the family sailed to Halifax on April 10, 1950. Canada was now their new home. Dad worked hard to learn English and to achieve educational goals that set him on a path for career success. Working for an office machine company in Toronto, he met a young beautiful woman by the name of Mary Rocco in an elevator. He worked up the courage to ask her out and the rest is history. They married in May 1956 and were inseparable until her death on June 26, 2023. Once again, they are together and for that we are grateful.
Astor leaves behind his devoted children Sandra (Rick), Rick (Carol) and his loving grandchildren, Meghan, Ryan, Cameron, Kyle, and Erin.
Dad’s presence was larger than life and he certainly left a lasting memory through his very admirable and successful career at Rex Rotary and Gestetner Canada, rising to President. This career allowed him and Mom to travel the world meeting friends that would last a lifetime and memories that together they held so very dear.
The faith community of St. Philip’s Evangelical Lutheran Church was an anchor in both our parents’ lives for the last 50 years, but for Dad especially, his involvement in numerous committees and projects gave him purpose and satisfaction during his retirement. We as a family are so grateful to Pastor Tuula Van Gaasbeek and the congregation for their love and support of both of our parents over the years and especially so over the last twelve months.
Life, as our family has known it, has changed forever but a legacy has been left behind that we will do our best to honour. Our grief is immeasurable but the love left behind will carry us forward.
Funeral services will be held at St. Philip’s Evangelical Church, 61 West Deane Park Drive, Etobicoke on November 1, 2023. Visitation at 10 am with the service to follow at 11 am. A luncheon reception will follow the service.
In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Philip’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Refugee Resettlement Fund would be gratefully appreciated by the family, especially our Dad.
