Elisabeth Theresia Hemming (nee Loeffler)
August 15, 1928- November 13, 2024
Eganville, Ontario, Canada
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Elisabeth on November 13 2024, at the age of 96. She passed peacefully in the Renfrew Victoria Hospital surrounded by family after a courageous battle with the sequela of old age.
Born on August 15, 1928, in Balk, Germany, Elisabeth was the daughter of Emil and Theresia (nee Funk) Loeffler. She graduated from Heidelberg University with a degree in performing arts, languages and music (specializing in opera). Elisabeth married soon after graduation and dedicated her life to her family, her community volunteerism and most especially her church. She was well known for her graceful spirit, her voice and her loving welcoming hospitality. She was not afraid of hard work, or adventure. She loved nature, grew great expertise in foraging for wild mushrooms, and proudly stocked the family pantry with wild fruit and berries. As an avid outdoors woman, Elisabeth loved cross country skiing, skating, hiking, swimming, canoeing, gardening, and spending time with her family at their cottage on Lake Clear. She was refined, well read and could read, write and sing in at least 5 languages in her prime. Yet she was not afraid to rough it and so enjoyed camping across Europe with her husband and two small children before they moved to Canada, while not yet being able to speak English. She was also a renowned beauty and muse to her husband’s photography and a supporter of arts including, the Annie Award, National Arts Centre Ottawa.
Elisabeth was an incredible wife to her husband, Dennis (pre-deceased in 1977) for nearly 30 years, but he passed when their youngest was just 10. Elisabeth then solo raised their eight children, George (Linda), Robert (Janet), late Brian, Susan (Morley) Hass, Monica (Peter) Rorvik, Christopher (Tina), Maryanna (John Page), and Paul (Andrea Stellmach).
She is survived by these children and her cherished grandchildren, Shelley (Frank) Gorenc, David (Liz), Jonathan (Diane), Annabelle, Eva (Jacob) Friesen, Claire, Ernest (Dana) Hass, Elisabeth (Jean-Rene Lavallee), Tia, Sabrina, and her beloved great grandchildren, Anna, Austyn, Arthur, Ben, Bedivere, and Katrina. Elisabeth was excited to know there were more on the way this year. There were also many loved extra children in Elisabeth’s life, especially Krista, Mary and Stacey.
She was preceded in death by her loving sisters Traudel (Georges) David, Rosemary (Eugene) Wiatzka, Rita, and Gisella (Horst) Sommer.
Elisabeth will be deeply missed by her family and friends, who will remember her for the kindness, humour, and incredible loving spirit that shone in everything she did. The family are very grateful for all the caregivers over the years, and at the end in the hospital where she was able to find dignity and release.
The family was grateful that due to close family support, especially Brian, Chris, Maryanna, Paul, Susan, and their families, Elisabeth was living on her own, and yet be surrounded by family and friends till the last weeks of her long, loving and glorious life.
Final arrangements entrusted to Zohr Family Funeral Home, Eganville. Visitation will take place on Friday, November 15th, 2024 from 9:30 am-10:30 am, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. James the Less Catholic Church, Eganville at 11:00 am. Interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Esmonde. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a charity of your choice or that you plant something to remember her by, or that you take a walk in the forest near you.
