Dolores Barbisan (née deGaust) of Burlington, Ontario, age 91, passed away peacefully of natural causes Wednesday morning, July 10 at Joseph Brandt Hospital in the company of her cherished son, Paul, and daughter-in-law Louise Lavell.
Dolores was born February 9, 1933, in Glace Bay, Cape Breton Island and raised in the neighbouring coal-mining town of Dominion. One of seven children of Archibald “Archie” deGaust, her mother, Catherine (née MacKenzie), passed away when she was four and Archie later remarried Dorothy MacKenzie.
In the summer of 1944, the family of nine moved to Antigonish on the Nova Scotia mainland where Archie pursued farming and Dolores, at the age of 16, joined the Sisters of St. Martha and became a nurse.
After nine years with the Sisters, Dolores left the order and relocated to Toronto where she continued nursing. Eventually, on a Newman Club ski trip, she met her future husband, Louis Valentine Barbisan. With Lou, Dolores raised four beloved children – Mary Frances, Paul Emile, John Louis and David Joseph.
Dolores, while running a busy household, remained active in her church as a lay Dominican and was an ardent volunteer in numerous causes. She was a unique and wonderful mother, a devoted wife, grandmother and friend.
Her gentle disposition, generous nature, kindness, openness to others and ability to be a good listener won the respect of all who knew her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Archie and her cherished son David. She is survived by her husband Lou, siblings Anne, Andrew, Benedict, Dorothy and Eleanor as well as her remaining children, Mary Frances, Paul (Louise), John (Mindy Heslin) and her beloved grandchildren Veronica Valentine, Jacob Spencer and Victoria Alicja.
Visitation at SMITH’S FUNERAL HOME, 1167 Guelph Line (one stop light north of QEW), BURLINGTON (905-632-3333) on Tuesday, July 16 from 6:00-9:00p.m. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Paul the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, 2265 Headon Rd, Burlington on Wednesday, July 17 at 11:00a.m. Reception to follow.
