Mr. John Anthony Mayer passed away peacefully at the Delhi Long Term Care on Sunday, June 23, 2024, with his loving wife by his side, in his 93rd year.
John’s passions in life were his family, the outdoors and especially his camp Twin Oaks, going fishing with his brother, and singing country music in his beautiful baritone. His family will miss hearing that voice.
Much loved husband and beloved partner for 71 years of Betty (Lerch) Mayer. Cherished by his children and grandchildren: Connie (Alan) and their children, Ryan (Jesstina), Kristin (Greg) and Austin ; Kathy (Donald) and their children, Meghann (George) and Ian (Jen); Annette (Danny) and her children, Geoffrey (Beata), John and Miranda (Ari), and Patti (Terry) and their son, Kyle. Proud and loving grandpa of eight great-grandchildren: Max, Judah , Jackson , Haseeba, Ronan, Alexis, Evelia and Griffin .
He was born in Hamilton , Ontario , the son of the late John Mayer Sr., Eva (Braun) Mayer and Christine (Rohrich) Mayer. He was predeceased by his twin granddaughters Ashley and Amanda VanLandschoot; his sister Eva (Mayer) Rell and her husband Wendell; his brother George and his wife Hilda (Mueller) and his brother Richard (Ric). He is survived by Ric’s wife, Judy (Thournout) Mayer and his sister-in-law Annie (Lerch) Lietaer, as well as many cousins, nieces, and nephews.
John was a faithful member, elder and usher at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church , Simcoe. For many years, he enjoyed the fellowship of friends at the Delhi District German Home where he served as a Director and where he met Betty in 1951. Before they moved to Delhi in 2006, he and Betty lived on the farm in Silver Hill for more than 50 years where they grew tobacco, asparagus, and melons.
In keeping with John’s expressed wishes a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 26th at 11:00 am at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church at 155 Colborne Street North , Simcoe. Visitation will take place at the church at 10:00 am prior to the service. Immediately following the service, a light lunch will be served downstairs at St. Peter’s. In lieu of flowers please consider a Memorial Donation to St. Peter’s Lutheran Church or the charity of your choice can be made at the MURPHY FUNERAL HOME, Delhi (519) 582-1290 (www.mfh.care). A gathering for family and friends to remember John will be held at a later date.
Betty and the family would like to express their deepest thanks and appreciation to the staff at Delhi Long Term Care for their compassion and kindness for John in the last years of his life.
