Norman MacDonald Obituary
After a courageous fight against cancer, Norman “Norm” MacDonald passed away peacefully at the Deep River and District Hospital on Thursday, September 5, 2024, surrounded by family.
Norm was born on February 16, 1956, to John and Catharine (Gillen) MacDonald in Newmarket, Ontario. He spent his childhood creating, exploring and getting into mischief with his brothers and sisters – often surprising his family by rescuing stray animals he had found on his travels.
He was lucky enough in High School to drench the future love of his life, Dorothy MacDonald (nee Walker), with a water gun, which was the start to their happy and loving relationship of over 50 years. They recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary on September 1st, attending “Come From Away” at the NAC, a special nod to Newfoundland, a place Norm loved dearly.
Norm and Dorothy created a beautiful life with their three children in Deep River. Norm adored his children, Jim MacDonald and his wife Charmaine of Corner Brook, Newfoundland, Katie Clarke and her husband Daniel of Constance Bay, and Laura Bunn, and her husband Adam of Deep River. Norm will forever be the most loved Grandad of Henry and Ivy MacDonald, Cameron and Ella Clarke, and Isla and Jameson Bunn. His greatest gifts in life were playing silly games and giving the best cuddles with all six of his grandchildren. He was so proud of all of them.
Norm is also survived by a brother Allan MacDonald of London and two sisters Kate MacDonald of Medicine Hat, Alberta and Nancy Patterson and her husband Tod of Marmora. Predeceased by two brothers Jim and Jack MacDonald, Norm will be missed by his sister-in law Sheila O’Reilly and her husband Bernie, and his brother-in law Jim Walker and his wife Pat, along with several much loved nieces and nephews.
In 1985, Norm and Dorothy made the exciting choice to chase Norm’s childhood dream of being a Chemical Engineer at Atomic Energy of Canada Limited. He loved working at ‘the plant’ and continued to advance his career throughout many divisions within AECL and then again at CNL. His role as Project Manager on DUALSPEC was of particular pride.
During his 39 years in Deep River he spent countless hours with his family- canoeing, boating, going to Burkes Beach, skiing at Mount Martin, and ferrying gaggles of kids to an immense range of sports tournaments.
Everyone who knew Norm, knew his love of joke telling and making people smile. Whether it was his family, friends, coworkers or a complete stranger, Norm seemed to hold a never ending list of jokes, always at the ready to make someone laugh. Most recently Norm had inquired as to why the Green Pepper couldn’t practise archery, the reason being, of course, that the poor Pepper didn’t Habenero.
Norm was also a gifted pianist and could play anything by ear, his family loved hearing piano melodies drifting through the house on many mornings and at any given time during the day.
A Memorial Service will be held in the chapel of Valley Funeral Home, Deep River on Tuesday, September 10, 2024 at 11:00 am. The family extends an invitation to join them for tea and light refreshments following the service at The Hexagon in Deep River. In memory of Norm, donations to the Deep River and District Health Foundation would be greatly appreciated.
