Ryerson (Rye) Picot, born in Terra Cotta, Ontario, on June 27, 1925, to Fred and Grace Picot, passed away peacefully in his sleep at the Chartwell Balmoral Retirement Community in Collingwood on October 22, 2023, at 98 years old. He spent his last days surrounded by the love of his family, son Ron and daughter-in-law Barb, reminiscing about his incredible journey through life, from his courageous service in World War II to the cherished holiday gatherings this year. He remained fearless in his older age, exemplified by his daring conquest of the SlotZilla zipline on the old Las Vegas Strip at 91 years old – a trip Barb and Ron will always remember.
Rye was a true master of his craft, leaving an indelible mark as a wood craftsman at Kaufman’s Furniture. His dedication to his work was only surpassed by his dedication to his family. As a tank gunner (Ontario Regiment (RCAC) – Ontario Tanks Regiment) during World War II, he played a vital role in the liberation of France, Belgium & the Netherlands. He diligently attended Remembrance Day, as a member of the Collingwood Legion. With his late wife Ina, he enjoyed the lively art of square dancing with the Blue Mountain Promenaders, and leisurely rides on their tandem bike through the picturesque town of Collingwood. Even well into his 80s, Rye continued to pursue his passion for skiing, golfing, hiking and vacation trips with his family.
This remarkable man not only built his own home in the late 1960’s but also crafted a beautiful chalet for his son, Ron, in the Blue Mountains. Rye had a deep affection for his daughter-in-law, Barbara, and adored his granddaughter Ashley Noble (Mark), who both held a special place in his heart. His presence was a source of inspiration and love within the Trinity United Church community, where he sang in the choir, and the entire town of Collingwood. He became a friend to everyone who had the pleasure of crossing his path and a source of knowledge for those who sought his guidance.
Rye is predeceased by his sisters, Lucille Nobes, Grace Groves, Ruth Jamieson, Dorothy & Hilda Picot and his brother Morrison Picot. He will be greatly missed by his cousin Silva McMaster.
His courageous spirit, unwavering dedication, and a life well-lived will forever inspire us. May his legacy serve as a reminder of the sacrifices made by the Greatest Generation. Rest in peace, dear Rye.
A private burial with the immediate family will take place this week, honoring a life well-lived. Details for a celebration of his extraordinary life will be released by the family at a later date. Ryerson Picot leaves behind a legacy of bravery, craftsmanship, and love that will forever be cherished in the hearts of all who knew him.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Collingwood General & Marine Hospital or to the Parkinson Canada Research Program.
